At last - some decent skies

Spent a while tonight looking at M42 and M43. Amazing detail, particularly with the OIII filter. Too much in fact for me to record. Still, I had a go at sketching the main areas of nebulosity.

Who needs a camera heh! That is agreat depiction of the nebula, and no light pollution.

If you have the time and patience Andrew, Go through the messier list. If they are all as goos as that, publish it.

What people see is what the get with that kind of chart. No illusions. If they want more then they can buy a camera.

That's a great depiction of what you saw through the EP Andrew. Would you be able to do a short report under the monthly target section of the observations board including this??

Nice one, visual observing isn't dead after all.

When I was looking at it a couple of weeks ago I saw the gas as more distinct wisps, did they look fuzzy to you?

To be honest, I'm not sure this sketch is a great rendition of what I could see - I agree with you Maroon bells - the arms have a definite wispy look to them, and within the central wedge of nebulosity there is a mass of fine detail that I haven't captured here. It's not easy trying to reproduce the detail while at the same time trying to avoid sharp edges that look unrealistic.

I just wish I'd paid attention in art classes all those years ago
