  1. For Jupiter I regularly use an 80A blue filter. Works a treat I find, and certainly brings out more fine detail. Not tried a contrast booster so can’t say if it is better or worse. The key thing to make sure you do is give the filter time with the seeing as when that seeing snaps into the right spot then the 80A certainly brings out a lot of detail to my eyes. Another plus too is it’s a hell of a lot cheaper too; approx £13 as against £53, plus P&P of course. Kerching! It also seems to work quite well on other planets too, although not as good as Jupiter I find.
  2. Well done Gert. Excellent! I saw the Veil for the first time at the SGL star party late year. Hoping to view it again later on this year when dark skies return again for more prolonged periods.
  3. Jupiter showing nice detail tonight. GRS easily visible in the twilight. Would stay up to view more but need to get sleep for an early start for work alas.

  4. Even though still light Jupiter is showing nice details. GRS easily visible, along with other belts/details etc, at least in my C8 tonight. Hoping for a good image! :)

  5. Ok, footie starting, so sees ya all later! Come on Englandddddddd! ;)

5 nil, 5 nil, 5 nil! And there’s another half to play still! Hehe!

Could end up been 10 nil by the end! Hehe! ;)

  6. Grrrrrr.......curse of the clouds! Just got set up, had a brief view of the moon, Venus and Jupiter, and hey presto clouds roll in again! Double grrrrr...... ????

They always come when you think you're safe! (And spent half an hour setting things up!)

      Yep, I know! ???

  7. Skies looking nice and blue still after some thunder storms, so may nip out after the footie to look at Venus & Jupiter again if possible! :)

  8. Tracking Venus with my goto mount between the clouds, in the hope of seeing Mercury when the sun disappears behind the roofline of the bungalow next door.

  9. Same old; get set up to image Jupiter. Get 3 small runs done after aligning scope, and Bam! Clouds roll in to spoil play! Pity as Jupiter was showing some fine detail, even though the GRS is not on view.

  10. No WL action on the sun today, but at least with the help of my goto mount I’m seeing a very wobbly Venus in the heat! Better the than nothing I’ve had for the last 10 days or so! :)

  11. Best data I’ve got of Jupiter so far is from the 7th May. I’ve tried 3 times since then, but results weren’t any where near as good as then. Best data from the 7th. Seeing was very good; Best from a couple of nights ago;
  12. Going to be stuck in a hotel away for work all this week until next Sunday, so no Astro anything for me this week apart from naked eye visual! :(

On the plus side we are having a work do in a very posh hotel at the weekend, so that makes up for it a little! Hehe! ;)

There are some perks then! I've got two nights in Amsterdam if I can ever find a flight / hotel combo that finance will approve

  13. From the album: Jupiter images 07-05-18

Best image taken last night between 10:30 to 11pm. Camera ZWO ASI 120mc, with ZWO ADC. Certainly not as much detail shown as from the C8 images taken.

    Jupiter 1

From the album: Jupiter images 07-05-18

First image of Jupiter taken with ZWO ASI 10mc camera attached to my C8 SCT, with a ZWO ADC in the imaging train too.
  15. Tonight’s the night to try my first imaging of Jupiter with my ZWO ASI 120 mc camera. In two minds which scope to use, so may try both the C8 SCT and also the Omni 120mm ‘frac (obviously not both at the same time with the camera) ;)

  16. Nice Sunny day, with clear skies, so doing a little WL solar (small AR group on the sun), and checking Venus out too in the daylight with my C8 SCT on my goto mount! :)

BTW: the magnification with the 32mm EP in my C8 SCT is 63x.

Okay on the 63x - I tried earlier this afternoon but could not detect anything in an ST80 / ES8.8/82 that gave around 45x mag - the filter was bought for the ED80 but I use it on the ST80 as it is more compact , especially when used from indoors ... maybe a bigger filter for the ST120 might yield better results with the extra aperture ?

In theory the larger the aperture the more the detail seen, although I did get better results from my Omni 120mm ‘frac with my Lunt wedge fitted than the larger aperture on my C8 SCT that had a normal kind of solar filter (an Explore Scientific sun catcher filter for C8) over the front end of it.

  17. Nice viewing of Jupiter around 11:30pm when seeing steadied down. GRS easily visible, with another dark feature just about directly above in the  North Equatorial belt. Best views at 166x with 80A blue planetary filter along with ADC. :)

  18. Sky conditions not great outside, even though clear. Too much murk around, and hardly any transparency, so packed up for the night. :(

  19. Woke up early at 3:30am. Got the scope out and managed to bag a few galaxies, globs, planetaries, and of course Jupiter, Mars and wonderful Saturn again! :)

  20. My ZWO ADC arrived today, so managed to test it out on Venus earlier on. Worked great from what I could see. Need to try it out on Jupiter and Mars for some more tests with it, but so far looking good! :)

Nice one. I'd never heard of these until recently. Were you using it visually or for imaging? Sounds like there's some improvement from them but not a miracle cure.

      Knighty2112

So far just visually. Didn’t have time really to try any imaging with it. I do plan to image Mars and Jupiter with it a soon a we get a break in the persistent cloud cover.

Cool. I’ll keep an eye out your reports on the ADC and your images too, of course :)

The cloud is terrible and it’s put me in a vicious circle. I buy new equipment, weather gets cloudy, I’m bored, I buy new equipment.... ;)
