  1. It's interesting how this thread makes you aware of the relative sizes of eyepieces. When I first got re-interested in astronomy, after my schoolboy years, I still thought that all eyepieces were small and light, but these days there are some real monsters. I thought that the ES 100's were big but I've seen some even bigger lately on the forum - almost like small telescopes. What is it in their designs which creates the size? Having said that, I do like the big ones. I'm not sure why, but there is something about them as you plug them into the scope that seems to indicate that they mean business!
  2. At last I think my eyepiece case may be how I want it - but I have thought that before! Bought a more rugged case and now have Explore Scientific at the longer focal lengths, and 'Green and Black' at the shorter end, plus a Baader zoom for good measure (and aligning!) Kerry
  3. Thanks Derek and Gordon. They do look good and I'll check and hope they come back into stock soon or I could try another size Kerry
  4. I love this thread but it mainly gives detail of the eyepieces rather than the cases. I have a cheap Maplin case which is now looking a bit worse for wear and the 'cubed' foam insert is all over the place. Can anyone recommend a good case that's not too expensive, preferably with foam that can be cut rather than the cubed stuff? Apologies if there is another thread somewhere but I can't find it.

I have managed this couple of times before and it's very satisfying - and the comet will be a bonus. Hoping for clear skies
  8. Had a break from observing for various reasons but now good to go again

Certainly have Kerry, its been wonderful :-)

  9. Finally began to see something after some helpful advice from a couple of forum members. My error was not setting the white levels etc in relation to the histogram. It's all new to me - except in terms of ordinary photography, so I was in the dark - literally. I now have 'live' images which are essential for alignment and focussing. Conditions were not good, however, with an almost full moon, thin cloud and lots of dew. So I packed in knowing that I was at least on the right road and looking forward to next time.
  10. Rob It's a measure of the quality of your posts that you were missed. Many of us could disappear for months and no one would notice! I too hope that everything is settled for you now and look forward to more valuable contributions from you in the future. The planetary nebulae post is terrific. Not just about PNs but lots of good tips about observing in general. Have you ever considered collecting such articles into a book? Cheers Kerry
  11. Clear evening, set the scope up, migraine! Bah!

  12. Sunday was a good day to continue the quest with clear skies nearly all day and into the evening. Tried some solar photos for the first time ever. Managed to cobble together various adapters to enable the DSLR to fit the small refractor which has a solar filter. Focus is difficult to perfect using the camera's screen so the results are nowhere near as sharp as the eyeball view but acceptable as a first attempt. With advice from SGL members it seems I need to try stacking etc. Also computer control of the camera would be an advantage but it looks like this will be a problem with the Olympus. In the evening tried the lodestar and lodestar live for the first time. Mixed success- there are no real instructions for the software just various threads on SGL so it was all a but 'suck it and see' . It's clear that you don't really get a 'live' view but after various bits of trial and error I did get images of random star groups trying out various exposures. The very bright moon did not help and I may have to wait until conditions improve but it's still fun experimenting. I also need to align the scope properly so that I can find specific targets - hopefully! The quest continues......
  13. I thought that I would start a blog following my initial wanderings into astrophotography. I always thought that it would not interest me, but I also said that I didn't fancy a Dob! So; I have two aims which I am moving towards; 1. Using a Lodestar camera with the Lodestar Live ap. 2. Using my Olympus dslr (E620) or perhaps even my old E300. 1.With the Lodestar in mind I have recently bought a Mac Powerbook, which is start because otherwise I only have a desktop machine. One aim is to control the mount from indoors and see images on the screen in comfort, perhaps even sketching from them. Is this cheating? 2. The aim here would be too use either existing lenses, or connect the camera(s) to various scopes. I am not sure that I would risk trying to mod the old one myself, and I want to keep the E620 for normal use, so for the moment I would be using them unmodded. The story so far: 1. I have the Powerbook loaded up with some Planetarium apps and Eqmac for the remote guiding bit. I have tested out all possible combinations and some simply won't connect to my AZEQ6GT. But a promising combination seems to be Sky Safari 4 Pro plus Eqmac. For some reason Sky Safari won't connect to the mount directly even though this version now has Skywatcher in the menu. I have only tried the laptop guiding once under clear skies and did not crack the sync to ensure that objects are centred - that's next. Yesterday I received the Lodestar camera which connects OK to the Macbook but there doesn't seem to be any way to test it out further except under clear skies - which are at a premium at the mo. Sunday looks like being the first opportunity to try it. 2. I've got an adapter for my scopes, and various lenses, but that's it so far. I was ready to fix the camera to the mount the other night and try M31 for starters but then cloud intervened. Ongoing..... Kerry
  14. The Lodestar has arrived. Can't wait to try it out. Whole new world for me...

  15. My Lodestar camera is en route. A whole new world awaits...

  16. BBC says clear until midnight and then cloudy. Clear Outside says cloudy until midnight then clear. Combine the two .....a clear night!

    1. ronin

      ronin

      That is the optimistic combination.

    2. kerrylewis

      kerrylewis

You're right! But at the moment the pessimistic combination looks more likely

  17. Good luck! it is not as easy as it sounds. I'm afraid mine was a write off. Personally I think it is a poor design that has loose lenses inside and yet allows the barrel to be easily unscrewed - but I put it down to experience.
  18. Planning to try some 'indoor observing'. Just got a MacBook Pro and would like to try controlling the mount whilst also using a lodestar camera and lodestar live software. Progress so far: tried a connection to the mount and ordered camera.

  19. I've ordered a Lodestar camera!! And me a confirmed visual only man. Heading for the dark side....

  20. Good night with the Dob despite the bright moon: a bright Perseid, glimpse of the ISS, some doubles and Comet Jacques. Enjoyed myself.

  21. Got my shiny new MacBook. A thing of beauty almost as good as a new scope!

upgrade the RAM at some point in its lifetime, cheap and very effective. SSD's are just incredible also - 3second boot up time.

Thanks for all the good wishes - you are such a nice friendly bunch. I had a good day reading all about the Herschels, listening to music and dreaming of dark, clear skies.

  23. Looks great. I've already had a look at what the elusive M4 SHOULD look like through my 925 :-) Can you add a Skywatcher 100mm refractor please? I still feel bad about my grumpy comment on the weather app - but really anything that adds to the arsenal of resources for us astronomers is to be heartily welcomed. Thanks again chaps Kerry

Sorry, my punctuation is not very clear: it is the Messier volume in the DS Companions series. I have some of the others but have been waiting for this to be reprinted. I really like O'Meara's books.
