Canon Announces M15P-CL Industrial Camera with Monochrome Sensor

"In what seems to be a first, Canon has announced an industrial camera sporting a 15 megapixel monochrome sensor and, most peculiar (well, at first sight at least) a Nikon F-mount. The camera is aimed at the manufacturing industry, where Canon reckons it’ll be used for quality control applications that the human eye isn’t sensitive enough for. To that end, the monochrome sensor provides low noise, high sensitivity, and great dynamic range to be able to capture the slightest imperfections in a product"

Probably need you sort of  R&D budget to be able to afford one... Looks like Canon have decided to try and break into the market at the "high" rather than "volume"  end of the market...

In the meantime I am seriously considering one of these...

JTW seems to sell a lot of etherware Pete, they keep popping up with 'new' products but there don't seem to be many real examples around. They also provide a debayer service which is of interest :)

I've ordered one of JTW's Monochrome 1100d's. Will hopefully post some results from it in the not-too-distant future :) I was tempted by their ultimate version but decided on a qhy8l instead - higher QE and cheaper.

As they are a young engineering company in the Netherlands I imagine most of their customers are in continental Europe. Funnily enough they posted that they'd like to get hold of a Canon industrial camera and try cooling it! Of course the Canon price will be high - if you have to ask how much you can't afford it!

While the Canon 700D looks promissing. These prices put it right in the middle of the midrange CCD market.  Hence, what Kev said, there aren't many real life examples out there from actual users.

The cooled OSC 700D costs 1500 euros and the cooled debayered 700D costs 1700 euros.

To put this into perspective to some CCD camera examples.

The QHY10 OSC camera has just seen a significant price reduction and can now be had for 1299,- GBP. This 10 Mpixel Sony HAD CCD sensor trumps any Canon camera. Period.

For 1700 euros I have quite a few options on the Mono CCD front in similar price range, like Atik 383L+ (or SBIG STF-8300M) or Atik 460EX. Especially the Atik 460EX has superior sensitivity and very low noise.

So these prices of JTW are just too high to justify it over a Cooled CCD camera. Especially since we still don't know the effect debayering a CMOS sensor has on the longetivity and quality of the sensor.

Just my 2 cents.

I have no interest in using it with a scope as I have a nice collection of L series glass... and while you can use them with a "proper" CCD using adaptors you lose some of the really useful features ...

I think it depends what you want from a camera. To be fair, the modified dslr's are quite versatile even if they don't have the QE of ccd's. The Atik 460EX looks a fine camera but costs pretty well £2000 whereas the jtw colour is 1500 Euros, about £1300 and 18 megapixels vs 6 mp for the Atik. The jtw cools with a delta of -85 degrees and can run at -35 deg lol. Ok, the JTW mono 700d does cost almost £1500 but at least JTW gives some choice in an otherwise overpriced astro camera market. Just my thoughts - I almost wish I'd bought the cooled 1100d!

There have been a few others pass through my hands as well that's just what I have at the moment...

Sadly I haven't been that active from an astrophotography point of view for a couple of years now (yikes 2010 was the last time) but used to do a "bit"  - pushing uncooled DSLR's to place's they really didn't want to go... the Sig says it all ;)

I'm not sure it's that clear cut.  Take a look at http://www.sensorgen.info/.  The read noise of a Canon or Nikon is much less than the 8-10e of the sensor in the QHY10 - very useful for shorter exposures.  DSLR QE is also catching up.  Where the QHY10 really scores in the thermal cooling but that is not a property of the sensor.

ofcourse there are also other specs that are of importance, like pixel size and well depth. The Sony HAD ICX493QA has a 6,05 pixel size and full well of 45ke- . Which is very Nice.

I guess the Nikon mount is more common in this market as they have keprt the same basic design and register for much longer than the other manufacturers...  Canon have said that they want to "break into" existing markets replacing older cams  I guess there's some pretty exotic glass out there in the high end inpection/machine vision market ...
