Orion over Keck: Giants of the night sky

Orion rising over the 10-m Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea.

Nikon D80+28mm len, ISO800. 5x30s, aligned and stacked to improve the noise (masked over the telescopes to get a clean image of them). Little bit of a fiddle to try and bring out the bright stars in the constellation (not sure it worked -- any tips!?).

Taken during full moon, hence the blue sky and bright telescopes!

For once i think the moon was your frined with this shot - the way the observatories are lit up just adds to the picture - I don't think it would have looked as dramatic without.
