  1. I agree Gina. I'd love to go narrowband as it would solve many of my problems but sadly budget just won't allow at the moment - maybe one day. I'm just hoping that as energy prices increase more and more, my delightful neighbours might think about turning off their outside lights to save money. Even better, the council might one day turn off half the street lights - that would be brilliant. I've seen LP get worse in my area in the last 4 years mainly thanks to neighbours who've had major work done on their houses, and then have outside lights fitted - not security lights, but the ones
  2. Thanks for all the comments everyone. Gina - yes I always use darks and flats - lots of them, and it does a woderful job of removing noise and vignetting. I'm afraid the gradient is a perennial problem caused by local light pollution from neighbouring gardens, which flats do nothing to solve. My LP filter does a good job of removing the Sodium LP but can do little against full spectrum outdoor lighting and it always gives me gradients to deal with. Normally I can remove it quite successfully using the DBA feature of Pixinsight, but with so much of this image being nebula, using the DBA tool
  3. I've tried this object for the last three years without success - mainly due to the fact that the camera hadn't been modded. Now it is modded I've finally managed to pick something up. 2 1/2 hours of data made up of 5 minute subs at ISO800 through the 8" Newt with the Canon 1000D Hope you like it. p.s. Having posted it on here I've noticed a gradient left to right which wasn't apparent before - now dealt with but haven't put the revised version on here.

  5. I really couldn't decide whether to post this one or not. I've had major headaches processing it with trying to keep Cygni52 under control. In the end I've had to compromise a bit which has probably lost me some of the fainter parts of the nebula but I feel I need a break from it now. At some point I will add more data and hopefully imrpove it further but it will have to do for now. Only 82 minutes data of 4 minute and 5 1/2 minute subs all at ISO800. I'd love to get another few hours on this really of longer subs but trying to get a decent run of clear sky is proving very elusive. Hope yo
  6. First time out for 3 months after all the lousy weather/ holidays etc. but managed this through the hazy sky. Just 1 hour 30 minutes of 3 minute subs at ISO800.
  7. I really wasn't expecting to photograph this but got up for a glass of water at about 4am, saw this outside and just had to grab the camera. Just taken with the DSLR through the Tamron 70-300mm lense hand held (well with a monopod). I took one overexposed to get the Earth light on the dark part of the moon which also seems to have just about capture some of the Jupiter moons.
  8. I agree Quatermass - I've imaged quite a few open and globular clusters this Spring as I too am finding them quite fascinating - they make a great early evening target and with the recent run of poor conditions, they've given me a chance to get a few images in shorter sessions.
  9. Gusts of wind didn't help last night - probably lost 2/3 of my subs and only got this because I kept them down to 2 minutes. Also, what remianed of clear sky between clouds seemed to deteriorate at about midnight so I had to give up on my other target - The Cat's Eye nebula. At least I got something though. 11 x 2 minute subs at ISO800 flats darks and bias taken.

Well I didn't set out to image a supernova the other night but when I checked it this morning against last year's subs I noticed it and got excited only to find it was discovered on 23.8.11 - never mind - it's a bonus in my image. Anyway - taken through the 8" newt with the modded EOS1000D on 12.4.12. 30 subs of 4 minutes at ISO800. I wasn't going to post it yet as I want to add more data but as I found the SN in it thought I'd post it now. Hope you like it.
  11. As this is about dealing with light pollution I've approached it from a different angle which should cost alot less. I've ordered a 58-48mm step down ring and a 2" skywatcher LP filter - much cheaper than buying a new lens - the vignetting should be minimal and dealt with easily with flats.
  12. I'd love to - so far I've been unable to find one - if you're aware of one then please let me know because the nearest I've found that would be suitable is the Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Zoom Lens at about £200 - there doesn;t seem to be an 18-55mm EF lens, only an EF-S lens.
  13. That was about using the program EOS_movrec which can take the liveview image and save it as an AVI - even though my EOS1000D doesn't have a video function, this program enables video to be captured. Tried it a few weeks ago and it worked quite well.
  14. This is a shot I've always meant to take and never got round to before - I love it when the dark part of the moon is illuminated by reflected light from the Earth - Venus also guests in this shot.
  15. I thought I'd take a break from my deep sky imaging last night and do some experimenting using my new remote timer for the camera to do some widefield work. I want to build up a catalogue of the constellations so thought I'd start with Gemini. Unfortunately, I use the EOS clip filter which can't be used when using the camera's 18-55mm lens so I had to work with no LP filter at all. (really need to get a second lens to butcher so I can use the clip filter with it). As you can see from the raw sub, LP is pretty damned awful here in Chester.
