I've used Sherwoods at Morton Bagott - it's near Henley in Arden.

It's a good job I used the SATNAV to find it - it's up a country road in the middle of nowhere. I'm surprised there isn't grass growing in the middle of the road.

Quite a picturesque spot, actually.

I think Sherwoods is the closest specialist shop:( which is unfortunate as it is between Redditch and Henley in Arden, so quite a distance! They do sell there stuff online and their site suggests that you call before visiting as they don't stock everything in their showroom but deliver straight from the manufacturers. I think internet shopping is the only way for us in the west midlands unless you fancy taking a long drive and then your not guaranteed to get what you want, but it would be nice to have a shop to browse around and see what your buying.

I'm a bit disappointed to see that David Hinds has closed his showrooms. I enjoyed having a rummage there before he moved to the current location.

Lulu: could you give us a bit of an idea is it's worth a visit to the current Sherwoods shop? I have shopped there when they were in in Birmingham and Chipping Campden but not since they moved to the new place.

There's also this linky for astro retailers:

It isn't a big showroom at all and there aren't a great deal of telescopes on display.

Last time I went there were about 8 on show, including a couple of Celestron SCTs and some Skywatcher newts.

However, they have cabinets full of eyepieces and binoculars - they do spotter scopes too. I was also able to pick up a power pack from there and other accessories, like a red light torch.

It's small and it's definitely worth phoning first to see if they have what you want.

Ace Cameras have an Astro shop, they are around the Bristol/Frome area. No idea how much the hold in the shop. Mentioned it as it is a relatively simple drive down the M5.

Green Witch, M6+A14, is a fair way off from Wolverhampton and these days doesn't seem to be holding as much as they used to. I vist there to get books mainly these days, they still have a decent selection. Scope and Skies is another 20 miles further and their showroom is well stocked. If you were going to vist GW then may as well do the extra and visit both.

Trouble is that unless you want something relatively expensive it is hard to spend the money and time on a long trip.

Ace Astronomical is based in Yate town centre, park by Tesco's and its a five minute walk. Not been to this shop but have check multimap for location. This is where I bought my LX90 some years ago when it was in Kingswood, then they were quite good on stock.
