veil nebula

Monday night I was treated to some reasonably transparent skies just before midnight so I spent some time observing and sketching the veil nebula. Conditions were pretty good, even from my light polluted back garden. With the OIII filter the nebula was very bright and showed some structure. None of the filaments that stand out in photos, but still some soft variation in brightness. Probably one of the best views I've had of this :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words - I always wonder how best to draw faint nebulae and galaxies like these. Obviously you want to show all the detail that could be seen at the eyepiece, but that inevitably means that they have to be drawn a little brighter - after all, nobody wants to spend an hour trying to tease all the detail out of a sketch! :)
