Not ideal conditions but Thursday we had freak weather, it was clear for 2 hours from 10-30 onwards :)

Managed 28 x 1,30sec subs

EOS 40D (Astronomised) ISO 800 , Sigma 100-300/4 @ 250mm

Very nicely done Guy! My one suggestion would be to up the exposure even more, if the tracking permits. At 5 mins you'll start seeing better detail in the dust lanes I would think.

Well the astrotrac mounted on my Manfotto 190 and 410 geared head can only manage 1:50 seconds with some binned later or 1:45 with nearly 100% keepers whilst using a 300mm f/4 lens.

Best results with long exposures to date have been 2:20 using a 135/2 L lens but sadly clouds abandoned play.

50mm or less can produce 3:00 but ive never had sky dark enough to take advantage of 3:00 less than f/2
