Hi there - finally decided to join a forum.

I have lots of interest and enthusiasm and can't wait to start looking up at the sky so first thing I need is advice on what telescope and other equipment I need to buy.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to SGL from across the river in Cleethorpes. Is there a branch of astronomy you are particulary interested in such as lunar, planets, deep sky, astrophotography etc. You might be better starting out with a reasonable pair of binoculars before splashing out on a telescope. The price range you are looking at is also very relevant. Have you checked out the Hull and East Riding Astro Society (HERAS) yet......

After a bit of reading - I reckon a decent pair of Binoculars is the best starting point.

what sort of magnifiaction am I looking for and can you recommend any.

I basically want to get acquainted with the night sky (constellations etc...) and perhaps a look at some planetary activity.
