Further to the earlier announcement by Richard Miles (BAA e-bulletin 407),

we now have further details of the funeral service to be held for Neil Bone,

and a number of other related matters.

The funeral service will be held at 2.00 pm on Tuesday, 5th May at the

Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Lane, off Appledram Lane South,

Apuldram, Near Chichester, West Sussex. The service, which will be

conducted by the Reverend Clive A. Ashley, Rector of Fishbourne, will be

followed by the committal in the churchyard, which Neil's family have said

may be attended by all those who wish to do so.

The Ordnance Survey map reference of the Church (marked, no tower, no spire)

is SU 841033 (Lat. 50.823818 N., Long. 0.806511 W.)

Please note that some of the tracks close to the Church are rather narrow

and are not suitable for vehicle access.

Directions to the Church:

From the A27 (Chichester bypass), at the Stockbridge roundabout, turn south

onto the A286 (signposted Birdham, Itchenor, Witterings). After about 500

m, continue on A286 at mini-roundabout (the B2201 to Selsey goes off to the

left). A little over 1 km further on, as the road curves to the left, turn

right onto the road signposted to Dell Quay, and after about 100 m, turn

right again. You are now heading north on Appledram Lane.

After about 500 m, take left turn (marked 'Church'). The Church car park can

hold only about a dozen cars and some overspill parking is being arranged,

but depending on numbers parking may be quite congested on the day. A narrow

path (marked 'Footpath') leads north to the Church of St Mary the Virgin.

(Note that on Google Earth, the church itself is only just visible, being

screened by trees, and the church car park (to the south) is effectively

invisible.) The nearest railway station is Chichester, and taxis are

usually available at the station to bring people down to the Church.

To help us with the planning of the car parking at the Church, it would be

very helpful if all those who are planning to attend the service, and who

are travelling by car, could drop an email to John Mason at

There will be family flowers only at the funeral, but if you wish to make a

donation to St. Wilfrid's Hospice (Neil's chosen charity), you can do this

either at the Church, or at the reception afterwards. Donations may also be

sent by post to: Trevor James Esq., Swanfield Chapel, 117 Swanfield Drive,

Chichester, West Sussex PO19 6TD. All cheques should be made payable to

"St. Wilfrid's Hospice" and clearly marked "in memory of Neil Bone" on the

reverse.

Following the funeral service, there will be a reception with refreshments

at Swanfield Chapel, 117 Swanfield Drive, off Spitalfield Lane, Chichester,

PO19 6TD, where all are welcome. There is a map with directions on the

(Please do not confuse the Chapel, which is close to the junction of

Swanfield Drive and Spitalfield Lane, with the Swanfield Community Centre)

that people with cars can help ferry those without their own transport from

Very sad news to here indeed. I will miss reading Neil's articles in Astronomoy Now as I always found them interesting and inspiring. His passing is certainly a loss to the astronomical community and my feelings go out to Neil's family and friends in this difficult time.

On behalf of myself and The Adur Astronomical Society our sympathies o out to all the family. Neil was a very nice man who gave our new Society a lot of help in setting up. Astronomy in general will miss him.
