Which Diagonal Size

Recommended Posts

+1 here for widefield sweeping with super low power EPs, it's great fun - and just nice to see everything in context as mentioned. I see earlier in the thread you have gone straight in for the Baader clicklock which also be my advice if funds allow - excellent piece of kit. I previously bought a TS-Optics branded GSO which is built really well but let down by the thumbscrews which are rubbish. Many people seem to have had no problems, but after two consecutive diagonals had the same issue I gave up and got a Baader 🙂

According to a few diagonal producers (A-P, AMP, Baader) the central portion of a 2" mirror diagonal is easier to polish and coat with greater precision than with a 1.25" diagonal.

Using 1.25" eyepieces works well with a 2" diagonal as the light cone is centered on the most accurately figured area of the mirror.

As with most higher end components in our hobby we are likely talking a small percentage gain of less scatter and rendering of the image.

I prefer to use a 2" [SCT] star diagonal on my 're-modded' ETX105 [image below] or C6/SCT, as it feels solid and not having to worry about a 1.25" or 2" eyepiece falling out when either scope is pointing towards the zenith.

When once I scoured the planet for a Baader BBHS 2" diagonal without success, I decided to get a 1.25" Televue everbright dielectric as my eyepieces are 1.25 anyway. No complaints at all regarding the TV which is a bit pricey for a 1.25 but as we all know, big names equals big money.

The Everbrites have gone up a lot since last year. I have a 1.25" Everbrite and two 1.25" enhanced aluminium versions. Apart from the price I can't tell any difference between them. Plus, aluminium shouldn't scatter as much as a dielectric.

I always use a WO 2 inch diagonal with my Starwave 102 ED-R, I have had a couple of other diagonals over the years including a TeleVue Everbright, but I always ended up with back with a WO diagonal. I use mine with 1.25 and 2 inch eyepieces. Currently I only have a single 2 incher, a rather good ES 28 mm number. I have a particular interest in open clusters and I find this to be perfect for my needs.
