Svbony 70mm Mini Mak

Recommended Posts

This is the Baader part. Now know that the M48 adaptor ring on the scope needs removing to allow the Baader helical focuser to simply screw on.

Or you could use the Baader Ultrashort 1.25” along with spacers.

You might need a T2 spacer to allow clearance for eyepieces with longer barrels. I bought this set as it’s not that much more than a single Baader spacer and gives a choice of lengths.

Some more images of the minimak with a Baader helical focuser fitted, also a reverse lightbeam image (focused) indicating that the true aperture is close to 65mm and the % obstruction about 37%.

The M48 adaptor took some shifting on mine but at least we now know it is just an adaptor. 🙂

Would an M48 to 1.25" adapter be a straight fit on this like this one? Or is it better to go for a T2 (M42 x .75) solution, either an extender or focuser -  no real preference?

Looks like it would work although think the T2 to 1.25” would be better.

Thanks, the stock levels of the parts needed is the bigger problem, I'll keep looking.

Update

I found a self-centring adapter I had fits the 48mm thread fine but have ordered a SVBony helical focuser with a 48mm adapter to try out as well. Now wondering whether the existong zoom eyepiece can be adapted to a standard 1.25" nose piece as well.

For anyone who has bought the SVBony mini mak, or those ready to get one:

I took a chance and got this SVBony helical focuser from Amazon  (£20.79 as a Black Friday deal - saves £5.20 but ends today). The 2" adapter threads onto the M48 thread on the mak without a fuss (just unscrew the zoom eyepiece).

And for those who wanting to buy the mak it's got £10 off voucher ending 30/11/21 dropping price to £75.99

It occurred to me that the zoom this comes with would share some design with other SVBony zoom eyepieces. So I looked to see if any 1.25" nosepiece would fit but could not find one. The thread on the supplied zoom is smaller than any of the nosepiece adapters I tried.

It seems a shame to waste it when it could be used on another scope for basic duties (probably a small scope used with the grand-children).

Anyone have an idea of the thread size or an adapter?

Thanks

Steve

I looked everywhere bit couldn’t find a suitable adaptor. I’m thinking some 1.25” ali tube with 1/8 wall and then enlarge the bore to fit over the barrel of the zoom?

Edit:

Just ordered an 50mm long “sample” ot 1.25” ali tube and will see if I can make it work.🤔

Any luck with this so far John, have you worked out the thread on the zoom?

Think it is an M28 thread.

The bit of tube arrived and will do the job. Perfect fit in a 1.25” holder. Will have to bore out the inside diameter on the lathe to fit the zoom eyepiece barrel and then will use a few grub screws to lock it onto the barrel.

Will get around to it in the next day or two.

Replaced the Rigel with a 6x30:RACI. Just didn’t get on with the Rigel on the little mak.

Found a Svbony finder shoe woth a curved base which was a good fit on the mak. Used sticky pads to attach it. Had the 6x30 RACI on a low profile bracket that keeps the finder in tight to the body of the mak

Saw you posts on the little scopes thread and did a quick search, found one on Amazon for £68 and thought why not. Should turn up on Wedneday. I already have a Svbony helical focuser on a 127 mak so I can try that out too.

Good stuff. 👍🏻

Think it will surprise you with the quality of the views.

Just waiting for a clear sky to try it out, curious to see if it will vignette with my 40mm Vixen NPL. If not it should have enough fov to take in the Pleiades.

Sold it to my wife as a cheap compact holiday scope rather than taking the AZ-EQ5 and 102 refractor.
