Second Scope Advice

The simplicity of the dob. No setup time to mention and comparatively cheap. The 10” is small enough to move arpund and easy to store.

Fsvourite scope is Big Red which I built myself using Japanese optics. You could buy over half a dozen Bresser 10” dobs for what that whole setup is worth. 🙂

That looks a proper collectible. Lost on me, but assume it’s really more a planet/lunar specialist?

That looks great - a bit canon-like!

Is that a magnetic knife-block?

Yes - with a couple of weights to counterweight my heavy eyepieces.

Or the posh alternative. Orion dobsonian counterweight. 😁

Orion Optics UK are an old fashioned type of company in many ways but make great optics. Being old fashioned they are very much of the they’ll treat you how you treat them type of thing. Ask for their help and they will do their best to help you but shouting the odds and being aggressive will get their backs up.

You can drop in to see what they do if you ask first.

I’ll get my eyepieces in order before doing anything rash like that, it would only end up with expensive conversations..

Do those slide onto a dovetail bar at the bottom like John’s then? Be nice to have an EP heavy enough for it I guess.

No they are magnetic so you can place them anywhere. The Bresser tube can be moved up or down for balance so a weight wouldn’t be needed but could be convieient if you had a big heavy eyepiece and didn’t want to bother moving the tube.

BTW the Orion tube is aluminium so can’t just use a magnetic weight.

As I google magnetic knife block..,

Just clocked that Orion optics are on the same industrial estate as a company I occasionally call on...

Magnetic strip needed because Orion Optics use aluminum tubes. One reason why their scopes are a bit lighter than some others.

Some of my eyepieces are over 1kg in weight so I need back end weight.

Nice that they supply the Peroni with the scope

I’m particularly impressed that Bresser supply a decent drinks holder! You should even be able to get a glass of vino on there too!

Just replaced the finder bracket with a low profile one (as I had a spare one) and found a 1.25” eyepiece extenstion in the spares box gto replace the big extension provided with the scope.

I use an adjustable height drummers throne (stool) for most of my observing.

Interesting the different eyepiece angle that we are choosing here. With tube rings it is adjustable, which is good. My preference is similar to Johns. My eyepiece is at a level that suits standing observing which is how I wanted the scope to be setup. John is clearly a "sitter".

I’m wondering if it’s time to start a Bresser Dob owners thread with all the new owners here on SGL? 🤔

So “Breeser Dob owners thread”  or  “Show us your Bresser dob” 🤔🤔🤔

I'm up for that. Mine should be arriving next week!

Clear Outside is showing some 'green' mid-week, although astronomical darkness ends too. Full moon too.

So I guess my first observing will be lunar! Better get a moon filter!

Up to you, but personally I prefer to avoid these "silo" type approaches on forums :undecided:

We have occasionally been asked to setup brand-specific sections but have resisted. At the end of the day, they are scopes like all the rest.

Unless they are Takahashi's of course ....

Still to work out whether I’m a sitter or stander. I have an adjustable stool I use for indoor portraits so I’ll give that a try. Noticeable how much lower the dob viewing position is compared to a tripod mount, felt great though! Very quick and simple to point and shoot (too used to that photography phrase!)

Looking forward to see the whirlpool, which was getting difficult last week from midnight, as hitting the vertical axis and the tripod leg! It’s now pretty much at the zenith.

Not sure how I'm going to post a picture when my Bresser arrives without feeling ashamed about the state of my garden. 12 months of a new dog (from puppy) have destroyed it!

Take it a night with a light shining on just the dob?
