Zwo 071 calibration/debayer

Ive recently started to try out my new zwo 071 and its clear the calibration/debayer should be different now to my previous canon 6d.

I calibrated some lights with a master dark but even my master dark looks abnormal ?? Then i debayered the calibrated lights as normal using RGGB but i get a crazy green cast which wasn't present with my dslr. In my integrated image i also get what looks like scales in the picture when i stretch the histogram???

Clearly a lot to learn!

Your not on you own Ken, I have had mine 3 weeks and I went back to my Canon, much more simple, I didn't get green anywhere though, with me my expectations were much higher for 3 minute exposure. Clearly I am not doing a lot right but I am equally not remotely impressed by this 071, am going to try again tonight.

It’s a zwo 071 mc so colour camera. Software is pixinsight

Alan I think it’s the user to be fair as this is all new to me. DSLR imaging was relatively simple and I hope this will be as easy once I know the basics.

I got some feedback from the pixinsight forum and it appears i need to use photometric colour calibration to get rid of the green cast (odd that it doesnt do this with a canon 6d as its the same RGGB).

Not sure yet on the strange pattern/scales on the picture, so hoping for some help with that one. Also my master dark is abnormal?

Hi all,

Ken82..Try a simple colour balance decreasing green channel with Pixinsight histogram, PS or any other

Thanks miguelo65

i was able to do similar with a colour balance, just thought it was odd that it’s effectively the same as my canon 6d RGGB. Anyway happy with that.

What do you make of the scales effect to the centre right of picture ? It becomes more apparent when you stretch the histogram.

  • Not sure what you mean Ken. Just applied a quick DDP with Maxim to the image and color balance. Anyway, as you strech image more visible vignetting is. Since no flat field was in it, i´ve use an Auto Flatten Background filter with Maxim and seems works fine on bright objects.

Ive highlighted the scaly area, what do you think? Its a lot more obvious on the higher resolution images.

Does anyone know what this pattern in the picture is ? Am I cooling too low for example ??(-15)

This is my image after colour calibration in pixinsight which is similar to miguelo65 with a strange pattern to the bottom right hand side-

And then after automatic background extraction showing an even greater gradient/pattern-

What is going wrong ?

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve got some new desiccant tabs on the way which will solve the issue. A bit disappointed this has happened so quickly as the camera has been in its original packaging throughout the summer.

Also noted the camera doesn’t have an external desiccant tube as I was lead to believe from description. The instructions zwo have sent me for replacing the desiccant requires removing the front of the camera and exposing the sensor etc. Not an issue I guess but not ideal.
