this 'should' work:

sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq (package name)

sudo apt-get remove (package name)

sudo apt-get autoremove

sudo apt-get autoclean

then reinstall

sudo apt-get install (package name)

The removal and clean up seemed to work alright - no errors.  Then I rebooted and tried installing unifi but that gave errors.

Tried installing unifi and when i asked "Do you have a backup" I answered Yes this time - I answered No last time.  It all went through with no errors :)  Not to see if it's available from the Menu...

Nothing in the menu but it is listed in synaptic.

Ubiquiti UniFi server is a centralized management system for UniFi suite of devices.
After the UniFi server is installed, the UniFi controller can be accessed on any
web browser. The UniFi controller allows the operator to instantly provision thousands
of UniFi devices, map out network topology, quickly manage system traffic, and further
provision individual UniFi devices.

So it seems that's a "yes".  But how to access it.  In the instructions for Windows and Mac it says to access it from the menu so I assumed it was the same for Linux.  Anyway, it seems to be properly installed now :)  One step forward :D

I have the user guide and it says this

Quote
The UniFi Controller software has a browser-based
interface for easy configuration and management.
To access the interface, perform the following steps:
1.
Launch the UniFi Controller application if hasn’t already
been started.
• Mac users:
Go > Applications > UniFi
• Windows users:
Start > All Programs >
Ubiquiti UniFi
.
2.
The UniFi login screen will appear. Enter the admin
name and password in the appropriate fields and
click
Login
.

I haven't yet found any reference to port number.

try running:

nmap 127.0.0.1

it should come back with all the services & ports....

or failing that

ps -ef

ps -ef | grep (service name) If it shows up

& I've just found from here (https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/new-install-of-Unifi-Controller-5-5-20-not-working-on-Linux-Mint/td-p/2042367) that opening a browser to:

http://localhost:8443 should work.

back to basics....

try:

ping localhost - should respond with local ip address and or 127.0.0.1, if not, check net settings

telnet 127.0.0.1 8443 -  if there is a response the web interface is running, if not you'll need to check the running services especially java tomcat (I believe that is what is used, but maybe just apache) \ mongodb
