I can't answer for Pixinsight as I don;t use it, but I get a feeling you can use it for registering the different filters.

What does registrar do that DSS or Pixinsight doesn't?

DSS can register images that are to be stacked together, but it cant register images that aren't to be stacked together, i.e. your Red, Green, Blue, and Luminance need to be registered to each other but not stacked together.  When they are combined they are combined via their relevant channels.

Also DSS won't combine images of different sizes, Registar will rotate and re-size images so they will fit each other exactly - which is how you can combine images done with different scopes and cameras and also binned and non binned data.

Yes it's not cheap but compared to some other software around and the cost of astro kit in general -  in comparison it is worth its weight in gold.  When I first started mono imaging I tried 2 other softwares for aligning the filters and found them convoluted and unreliable, and I could not align the images properly.  Then some-one told me about Registar so I bit the bullet, and those who use it including Olly and myself will swear by it.  Well it's there if you need it.

Does it stack the images as well as matching binned  RGB to 1x luminance so you don't need dss at all or does it then all need to bevtransferred to Dss or similar.

I just connect to my kit load up a previous image

Does it work easily with the other software you use..some functions overlap with Sharp cap for example and I've just got guiding working so don't want to confuse things with extra programmes...but Im really tempted as The APT page looks really good

You need to stack the images in DSS or whatever stacking software you use, then when you are left with - say - Luminance stack, Red stack, blue stack, Green stack, you take them into Registar and make sure they are all rotated/same size as each other so that when you create the coloured image the stars will sit exactly on top of each other.  Registar has a crop tool which - if there is any movement between the filters the resulting images will sit exactly on top of each other.

So no, Registar doesn't do the stacking.  Or if it does I have not found it.

AstroPixelProcessor is another piece of software that will calibrate and align your images, regardless of image scale, size etc. It also has a neat mosaic tool also.

Thanks Steve..it does look very good for the price.I will dig deeper in to tutorials and manuals and find out what should work best for my set up.C
