i used st/st calv, no painting and looks quite good, same strength as mild steel and weight

When i built my 20 inch dob I  used the  Kriege and Berry book http://www.willbell.com/tm/dobtel.htm  

this is an excellent book although it is not cheep it is worth every penny. I Purchased the pole clamps and  in certs directly form obsession.

Use the best quality Burch ply you can find it is not worth going to the trouble and effort of making a large telescope if the materials ate not up to the Job.
