would this work for flats?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering, I have the ED80 and flats have always been a headache for me, I have found a cardboard tube that slots over the end of the scope nicely so if i was to put my white cloth over the end of the scope first then slot the tube on (which should pull the cloth tight and smooth, then put a dim torch the other end  and fix it at centre would this be suitable to take flats? or am i being stupid again lol. Im just thinking rather than slew the mount to my window it can just slot over the end

You could try it, it might work, then it might not.
I take it you don't want to spend any money, well, can't say I blame you.
Anyway, these are cheap enough, but perhaps overkill for an ED 80.
Perhaps an experienced Imager will advise you better though.

I would avoid shining a light directly onto the cloth - this is asking for trouble. Rather illuminate the field indirectly by pointing the covered scope at a flatly illuminated surface.

I have lamp in my obsy that I direct at the roof. I cover the end of my scope with two white hankies (clean ones ;) ) and point it at the roof. works every time. In fact, I've just finished a set as I'm typing this :)

just been messing with the tube  and on the one end its capped with a white cap, out of curiosity i tried it on the end of my scope and its exactly the same size as my dust cap except its white. that should be great for doing flats its pretty thick so the light will diffuse, why dont they make white lens covers  along with black ones makes sense
