...and between Mars and Arcturus (see Stu's screenshot) is Comet Catalina which for me is a bino or scope object.

On 1st Jan it's about 0.5 degrees from Artcurus, worth a look.

Ive all but given up observing Mars. Ive had it in my scopes a few times but only once have i been lucky enough to see details such as the polar caps and the region which looks a bit like India.

The best view i have had of Mars was about 22 yrs ago when it was at opposition and that was with the naked eye from the Sahara in southern Tunisia.
