A Sydney University student has for the first time used radio telescopes like a giant pair of electronic eyes to locate huge plasma tubes in the atmosphere that interfere with astronomy observations and which could affect some civilian and military navigation systems

I'm confused, I always thought plasma was something that happened at high temperatures, wouldn't that make them give off visible light? What forces make them tube shaped? where is the energy to make plasma coming from?  Why is dog food so expensive? Answers adatped to the meanest intelligence please.
