Help with background levels (NGC2903)

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Can you look at these 2 links and tell me which one is best?  Im having a real problem with the backgrounds - I dont want them to be black and clipped, just very dark, like in real life(without the orange glow that is!) on my laptop the 2nd one looks best but the 1st one has background levels around what I would expect...

Both ok by me. At this point it's personal taste. If you like the second, go with it. I slightly prefer the darker background.

But does the background look clipped? As in completely black? I'm trying to work out if it's my laptop screen that is rubbish!

https://blinkysastroblog.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/highbackgrund.jpg  - High Background levels

Im just wanting to know if the low background levels link looks like the black is clipped, on my laptop it does but Photoshop shows the levels as what I would expect for a normal unclipped background

The high version is the more correct one as the low one is near clipping but not clipped. There is also a little green running through the image, a single pass of the HLVG at the medium setting sorts it out.
