Thanks for the link David. I've since found that if you upload the pics to google+ photos it makes a reasonable attempt at stabilising, by applying their Auto Awesome algorithm.

It's missed out a few frames though, so I need to learn how to control it.

I also had problems with PIPP because it is looking for a whole, or stable partial disk (if you select the lunar shadow option), to centre but because the shape changes all the way through the transition it struggles. It was a bit more stable choosing the lunar shadow (top) option.
