Saturday - Lovely Sunny Morning

Pig

Recommended Posts

Some great solar viewing this morning already

Lots of beautiful prominences popping up all around the disc, too many to go into great detail.

The surface detail the past 2 days has been absolutely wonderful, unless I am just getting used to filter placement

I can see me having another lazy mesmerising day sat in front of the scope with some lovely red wine

I have made this bracket so I can put my Pronto & Lunt side by side on my AZ4, this should enable me to view both white light & Ha without having to swap scopes.

I have checked both the bracket and AZ4 for balance up to 10kg so this should easily be ok for the combined weight / spread of weight of the 2 scopes

It took me over 2 hours to make it in total and material costs were £40 so not bad considering a decent/strong L shape bracket costs that.

I will post some pics of the little gems mounted side by side when the 1/4" fixings arrive.

Please let me know what you think

This is very nice. But mind you, time for you to invest in some imaging kit so we can see through your eyes... :D

Thank you Imad,

I do not have a tracking mount kind sir so imaging is out for now. However, maybe a webcam will be ok for non tracking mounts.

You will get hooked Imad if you go down this route, so its best if you stay a solar noob  , it is seriously addictive.

Can you imagine what it would be like to see one of the many stars you have viewed close up and how much you would cherish that feeling  ?

Take it from me that is just what it is like

I had my first ever look at the sun about an hour ago through the CPC1100

I could make out a few areas of activity on the surface but no prominences leaping out from the outer edge. I'll keep popping out throughout the day and enjoy the nice weather and my first views of solar activity.

I can imagine...

So, you actually see texture and halos as well?

You're using Lunt 60, right?

Yes on texture it looks like an orange broken in half (not neatly sliced) with tiny black pixels forming their detail outline.

Then there are sunspots with filaments, or eyelashes as Gerry calls them, joining the sunspots to the solar surface.

There are also very distinct scars with bright swirls that tend to surround or are close to sunspot activity. The rest of surface looks like a sprinkling of black pepper  that comes in and out of focus almost as if it a fluid.

The prominences ( maybe what you mean by Halos) protrude around the outside of the disc. Some are quite dramatic and some are not.

I am using a Lunt 60mm with a B600 blocking filter. I would like to try a double stack module as I believe this enhances the black pepper effect  but at £1100 a pop I want to see it first. However, if it works I would surely buy one .

Derek,

Are you using the Baader film full aperture ? If so you will not see prominences as the appear in Ha only

Derek,

You cant with your scope I am afraid, as SCT's are not designed for solar observing. I use my SCT for the night sky

Some refractors can be converted and this can enable you to use them for both solar and the night sky or as a dedicated solar scope. Alternatively you will need to buy a dedicated solar scope.

Would a H-alpha filter allow me to see any more than I can now?

Is my Dob able to do more solar stuff than my SCT?

Do I really have to buy another scope?

I am afraid so.

I have read some older posts on here that in a given set of a circumstances there is quite a risk of fire with a Dob especially  if it is a truss type.

A Ha filter is mainly used for photography.

Looks great Shaun, just the job. I suppose I feel a little nervous that there is a lot of strain on those two Allen bolts, but if you have tested it to 10kg I'm sure it will be fine.

Look forward to seeing the photos of it all setup.

Sorry for the dumb questions but does that mean that an Ha filter will definitely not allow me to see anything of prominences unless I use a camera?

Would my webcam and an Ha filter be of any use?

An Ha filter won't allow you to see prominences either visually or when imaging unfortunately.

You need a specialist Ha scope like a PST or Lunt which uses an etalon to give a very fine bandpass, that's the only way to see prominences and filaments etc.

Stu the bolts are quite a bit longer than the stock ones, I have also put a dowel in between the 2 hex bolts to give a bit more security

It does look great. Did you machine it yourself?

The double stack is well worth it, I purchased one second hand, they do crop up now and again.

I get much more surface detail, and you can see prominences wrap around onto the Solar disc, giving a 3D feel to the view.

Would not be without it now.

Other posters on here have pointed me towards this.

It enables rotation of the second etalon, to further refine the view, hopefully.

Will post my findings when I receive it, 2 to 3 week delivery..........
