GazOC
Daz has got one, they are indeed scaled down EQ6s.Whats the plan Greg?
russ
Ant uses one too....and he's dead chuffed with his.Max load is 12Kg's with reports of 15Kg's being okay. So no worries with a 10" newt or 10" SCT.Russ
Greg
Skywatcher ED 80 Pro on an HEQ5 mount.I was originally thinking of putting it on a EQ5 - but by the time I've bought the drives, I might as well go for the HEQ5! As it comes with both drives and is a bit cheaper to upgrade to GOTO than the EQ5 (At a llater date)Some one delete this thread before Steve comes home tonight - he won't talk to me otherwise!!Greg

Jamie
This forum is turning into the 'RefractorGazers Lounge' There is a reason for that Gaz and that is portability / performance and price. They are coming down in price these days.Refractors might not have the light gathering power of big reflectors but they do have their uses.Hence the reason neither you nor me are willing to part with ours. daz
Let's see Gaz what are you missing....An RC, a truss-tube, an SCT, ........

Very true Jamie. That Ebay auction yesterday sealed it for me, if anyone thinks they're getting my refractor for £100 they are dreaming!!I'm thinking next year of trying to get a decent secondhand Apo at a price where I can sell it on if I don't think the better views are worth the extra money. Jamie
Just my opinion here but an APO for me would be for mostly imagingas visually you would need a very expensive large apature versionto see any of the real DSO's.Lunar views don't need an APO for good viewing.Planetary views need more apature than APO.Thats why i bought the 80mm version cos no way am i gonna pay3/4 grand for one of the bigger OTA's.Like you say i couldn't justify the money loss in selling any of my refractors.Looks like i will have them for good.If i want another scope like say a Mak or even one of those reflector thingys I will just have to save up for it.Back to the HEQ5 i don't have a lot of experience with them but i am sure all the guys that have them are happy with their performance. And sticking an 80mm scope on one would be great for performance and stability. Greg
Daz,Can you slew the scope aroumd manually or do you have to use the drives??Greg
GazOC
Greg,In Dazs' absence.... You can disengage the clutches and move the scope manually, one thing it deosn't have that you may be used are slow motion controls.Gaz
Greg
I've just weighed my 8" Newt and it tips the scales at 8kg so that leaves 4kg for the ED80.Ok to piggyback???? ED 80 for widefield and imaging, piggybacked on the Newt for viewing??Greg
Greg
You can disengage the clutches and move the scope manually, one thing it deosn't have that you may be used are slow motion controls.Gaz,Does it have slo mo on the controllers - excuse the ignorance here - I have upgraded my EQ3 to a motorised RA drive which has slo mo slewing and it track automaticallyGreg
GazOC
Yes Greg, it has x1 to (I think) x16 tracking. But you can't turn the motors off and track by hand using cables like you can on a Eq3/2 or EQ5.Gaz
Greg
Thanks Gaz,Thats ok as long as you can disengage the motors and slew around manually, then lock the clutches and slew in using the controllers.Greg
GazOC
Yep, thats how it works. The piggybacking sounds like a great setup BTW!!
