If you look carefully, it seems there's a hatch in the roof. Probably this part of his house is used as an observatory. I don't know...maybe my eyes are deceiving me.

looks to me like he had an out house (pictured right) and the scopes got too big for it so he put them outside and built a new outhouse over the whole lot.
