  1. Hi JOC You are absolutely right, there is definitely more than a sprinkling of poetic license. The image is a mixture of three separate filters, each filter isolates particular gas emissions, you can then assign a colour to that particular gas omission to achieve the desired result. By the way, each individual stacked filtered image is greyscale as the camera I use is a mono camera So in conclusion, it is a false colour image but nevertheless the colours chosen help to isolate each gas emissions and enhances the contrast showing more detail and a “pretty picture” too I hope that helps to explain. Bryan
  2. Thanks JOC for your kind comment, you made me laugh out loud! (Where did I park my probe!) I remember wondering how on Earth could you produce an image like that! And I still do, there are some amazingly talented people on this forum that produce images of exquisite quality and subtlety. Thanks again Bryan
  3. Thanks for your kind words Alan, I am happy with the image, it’s probably is my best to date, I just know there is some loss in definition in the stars in NGC2244, and the stars have no colour, but it was time well spent. Cheers Bryan
  4. Thanks Nikolas! I am encouraged by your use of exclamation marks!!
  5. I believe, as the title states, this is my best capture of the beautiful rosette nebula. The nebula in Monoceros is approximately 5200 light years away The Rosette nebula and the open cluster NGC 2244 are about 130ly in diameter, about 5 times the size of a full moon. I sent this image to my brother who doesn’t really have any interest in astronomy and he replied... ”wow! Is that where god lives!” 😂 Although I am pleased with this image, there are a few points that I would like to improve on, mainly the clarity and colour of the stars, they are a bit bloated and were magenta at the end of integration so I ended up just desaturating them. The nebula was low in the sky when I started imaging and there was a wind so I lost a few subs and the sii wasn’t as sharp as I would have liked. it’s 17.5 hours in total, 5.5 hours Sii and Oiii and 6.5 hours Ha, all 30min subs shot over moonless nights with a revelation Astro ed100 f6 doublet with an atik 460ex and astrodon 5nm filters captured with Artemis capture, calibrated and integrated with APP than transferred to ps6 where I basically tried loads of things that I probably couldn’t reproduce in the same order again!! (Need to start keeping notes!) It’s a mixture of SHO with an HSO added in Lum, just a bit. Anyway, thanks for looking I hope you like it. Bryan
  6. Lovely image Martin great detail, depth and colour. Thanks for sharing Bryan
  7. Great capture Carole this is new to me! Where in the heavens is it? Thanks for sharing Bryan
  8. Great capture! I may have a go at this one year, I think I prefer the first one. Thanks for sharing Bryan
  9. Is dithering a benefit or a hinderance to mosaic images? Cheers Bryan
  10. Thanks for posting your work so far, I'm afraid I can't help you but as I plan on putting my first APP Mosic together as soon as I can obtain enough data on panel 2 I am watching this with interest Have you posted this question in the APP forum? Nice image btw It's defintely got potential! I hope you get the help you need cheers Bryan
  11. Another great idea! thank you, I still have so much to learn! I guess it would be a good idea to take some RGB images when the rosette is at its highest so I can try and transplant some natural star colours?
  12. Thanks for that! I’m pretty sure I chose the wright version when I tried last, in fact I may have even tried both?! I then looked at compatibility and I think Cs3 was the last version it was reported to work with? it was a while ago though and I’ve slept since (as it’s been Cloudy!) So I’ll have another go. cheers Bryan
  13. Thanks for the input Fireball and the kind words 😊 I have yet to successfully integrate HVLG into ps6, I don’t think they are compatible! I may have an old copy of ps3, but I don’t know if I can run both versions of photoshop one one machine? cheers Bryan
  14. Thanks Andy! so simple! now I just have to cope with the hazy bloated remains! i guess there must have been guiding or focus issues? Or maybe 30min subs are pushing it?!
  15. Hi i have been imaging the Rosette nebula over the last few clear nights we just had and I am hoping someone will be able to give me some tips for tackling the magenta stars? It’s an integration of 6.5 hours ha and 5 hours sii and oiii, all 30 min subs, captured with Artemis capture, calibrated and integrated in Astro Pixel processor then transferred to photoshop for selective colour, and other tweaks. APP has a calibrate star Colour option but in this case it drains the whole image of the colour and makes it difficult to get the golden reds and deep blues that I was after. I mainly use Photoshop ps6 and don’t have pixinsight any help would be awesome! many thanks Bryan
  16. Fantastic Image David! It's great to see you making the most of that big sensor. I wouldn't have noticed the bad column if it hadn't been highlighted but when you know you've got one it becomes a distraction that other people may not even see! I too have a camera with several bad columns (as you know) and It forced me to completely change the way I image and process my images, it was more work but I think my images have improved as a result. I not only dither but I now integrate my data in astropixel processor creating a bad pixel map using dark flats etc. Here is an example of my BPM and it's bad columns They don't seem to appear in my final stacks now! I don't think for one minute I can teach you anything you don't already know, your images are leaps ahead of my processing skills I just wanted to offer some encouragement that you will overcome this. Having said that, I do hope you get some joy from FLO as it was a new camera and not cheap!! good luck! Bryan
  17. Hi all I planned on gathering data on IC443, The Jellyfish Nebula for a few months then seeing what I could do with the data, It was one of the first DSO's I Imaged late last year when I finally took the plunge into mono CCD, imaging with the fabulous small but deep sensor of the Atik314l+. I Quickly caught the CCD bug and upgraded to the Atik 460 with the larger sensor and smaller pixels it matched some of my smaller telescopes I have. It started quite well a couple of months ago but frustratingly the weather has had other plans for me of late so I got bored of waiting and started to play with the data I had. 16 hr Ha 10 hr Sii 5.5 hr Oiii Some of the Ha and Sii subs have been acquired with a full or nearly full moon and the Nebula has been low in the atmosphere in the early shots but I haven't been brutal when deciding which subs to use and I chose to throw them all in the mix in APP I chose to not cut the black point too much as it's a dusty region and not really black. It's by no means an groundbreaking image. My processing skills need a lot of work and I would probably benefit by purchasing Pixinsight. but here is my image so far.... thanks for looking and I welcome criticism and or processing tips Cheers Bryan
  18. I Tried a different mix... This is an SOO with H as Luminance. I need more data to smooth it out. Cheers Bryan
  19. Awesome I love the image and the description! It makes me want to hide my ring! thanks for sharing Bryan
  20. A slightly bluer version. I need to get some sleep now! cheers Bryan
  21. I have just looked at this on my iPhone and it’s obvious to me my laptops screen must need calibration! there is way more green on my iPhone than the blue I see on my laptop!
  22. HI you guys! So I was treated to a rare couple of nights without clouds! Well to be honest it was a night where the clouds cleared quite late after a full day of drizzle and rain followed by a clear night that started to cloud up around midnight. Beggars can't be choosers! I wasn't sure what I was going to shoot, it was too early for all the goodies around Orion but too late to enjoy the bounties of the Cygnus region and with my current setup (atik 460 on an f6 100mm Apo) I was limited to close ups. Also there was the moon so NB was the secure option. The Heart Nebula, one of my favorite DSO's was going to be too large so I considered it's 'neighbour' The Soul Nebula IC1848 I Imaged the Soul nebula many years ago with a canon 460 dslr and I was fascinated by the likeness to a fetus and it's proximity (from our perspective) to the Heart Nebula (another day/night) This is the image I captured years ago. I couldn't tell you how many hours are involved but I'm pretty sure it'll be a one night stack of 8 min subs? I could probably reprocess the data better these days, and if I find the time, hard drive and impetus, I may have a go, but in the meantime I was never going to get the whole thing in my limited FOV so I decided to take a 'portrait'!... Here is the 'portrait' of the Soul Nebula, up close and personal! It's only 2hrs40min Ha, 2hrs30 Sii and 2hrs30 Oiii a very quick and dirty process, aligned and integrated in APP saved as a tiff 32bits float adobe 1998 rgb image (I think thats right) then opened in PS6 for selective colour and a bit of levels/curves etc.. If the skies allow, I think I'll continue with this image, there are some fascinating features in the 'face and neck' that I'd love to enhance, and it's a lovely hso region! Thanks for looking Bryan
  23. Hasta la vista green?! i have tried to install it but I don’t think it’s compatible with ps6 . 😢
