  1. I tend to agree. It should be a separate amount on Council Tax bills, at least everyone would know how much is being wasted.
  2. Despite the Police Report showing no evidence of increased crime and saving in excess of £300k per year, Essex Council abandoned their Part-Night lighting. When I complained Basildon Council told me they’d “campaigned on the issue of getting the lights back on to address the real concerns of residents who live here.”
  3. Hi Steve, I don’t know the answer regarding 2gb, I use an iPad. However, once you have set up the imaging run, it will operate with the controller off. You can walk away and let it do it’s stuff. It seems to use most of my iPad power, whilst focussing, when it constantly shoots, or say in in live mode, when it’s constantly stacking and displaying the results on the screen, or videoing. I’d guess it’s these sort of actions that use the controller ram, and even then, probably only to display the results on the screen. Plate solving for example, is just a single shot that takes seconds to process and display the image. I’d therefore guess that most actions will operate normally with the lesser ram, but I can’t say for sure. and a Merry Christmas to you too.
  4. Nice report John. Not many people have seen them in the same FOV for hundreds of years. I joined the club this afternoon briefly with my 10” and 17.3mm. Three of Jupiter’s moons, but it was very cloudy so I didn’t notice Saturn’s, but it was for literally only a couple of minutes. I still feel very privileged to have seen them together, it was quite something.
  5. That is certainly a Wow image! beautiful.
  6. Hi all, Can anyone tell me what the symbol top left activates in video mode in the ProCam 8 app. I can’t find it mentioned anywhere and apart from turning yellow when I click on it can’t tell what it does? Many thanks.
  7. There’s some good info about the 450D in this link as well. https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-Rebel-XSi-450D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Review.aspx
  8. They’ll be fine but the reduction to dynamic range by increasing it to 400 is so minor, that most of the time it’s worth using 400. I think that’s the gist of the argument.
  9. Does this link help. I bookmarked it ages ago as I thought it was a good explanation. From what I’ve read the most appropriate ISO for the 450D which is what I use is 400. http://astrofriend.eu/astronomy/tutorials/tutorial-iso-dslr/tutorial-iso-dslr.html http://dslr-astrophotography.com/iso-values-canon-cameras/
  10. Getting closer, had a clear horizon for a change so took this whilst I had a chance just after they became visible. Quite pleased the moons showed up.
  11. I’m not trying to wind you up, we are going round in circles. I’ll try to explain my opinion in a different way? If there are no more street lights anywhere, would these “already criminals” commit any more crimes than they do now? There wouldn’t be any easy targets because everywhere’s the same. So would it make them be busier burglars?
  12. True, it is my opinion, and it would be absolute rubbish if people took up crime because there is no street lighting.
  13. Well I apologise, I know you didn’t say that you missed my point, which is that if there were no street lighting anywhere it wouldn’t make a difference to crime.
  14. No probs, everyone is entitled to their view. The only think I’ll add is that no street lighting (in my opinion) doesn’t make someone become a burglar or criminal. So if there were none anywhere it wouldn’t make any difference to crime. It would however save thousands of pounds, save natural resources, aid wild life, reduce human illnesses, aid sleep and of course reveal more of the night sky for everyone to enjoy.
  15. How do you know it’s going up because of part-night lighting? I ask because the police commissioned a study in Essex about this and found that it had no adverse affect. There is often a presumption voiced on social media that street lighting helps fight crime, whereas in reality it probably helps criminals to see without the aid of a torch. Anyway, here’s a link about the report. https://www.essex.pfcc.police.uk/news/report-finds-no-evidence-part-night-lighting-impact-crime-levels/

I took this last February and decided to reprocess it. Its an hour and 25 mins of 30 second exposures with the baby Tak on the Star Adventurer. Any suggestions welcome, thanks for looking.
  17. Watch them move into position, a screen shot from Sky Safari, it might be the best view if this cloud doesn’t go away! If it posts that is FullSizeRender.mov
  18. Here’s a guide Adam, https://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-producing-masks.html#Section3
  19. Oops, just noticed some other threads on this so feel free to move this if necessary.
  20. Will Jupiter & Saturn look like one bright star with the naked eye on the 21st. According to Sky Safari, if I’ve looked it up correctly they’ll be only 6’ apart. Alcor & Mizer are 11’ apart and they look like one star to me. What do people think?
  21. This is a useful calculator to compare settings. https://rechneronline.de/exposure/ If I were to take a 300 second exposure with my canon at ISO400 and baby tak, which is f6.2 with my flattener, the exposure value is -5. Roughly the same as using my 135mm lens at f2.8 for 60 seconds. However your local conditions will affect what you can reasonably achieve so as @KP82 above says, most try to get the histogram about 1/3 from the left.
