What to do now?

Recommended Posts

Okay so the binoculars I have now, I was cleaning the dust out after finding dust inside the objective lenses. I discovered one of the Porro prisms is chipped.. I don't Know what to do about it. I'm not too terribly upset as these were second hand and I did test them out before they were purchased. If they were brand spanking new of course I'd be upset. Is there anyway I could have them repaired? Or just be keeping an eye on it for now

I'm no expert , but unless they are high end premium bins, then I would only imagine a repair could be more costly than getting another second hand pair.

Perhaps others can give a more experienced answer. Post your question in the binocular section too, might get some more answers.

Good luck.

Is the any defect in the image when you look through them?

If "No!" than I would not worry about it.

I was at a car-boot sale during the summer with a friend and I spotted a pair of 16x50 binoculars for sale as I was going to purchase them for my friends son as he has an interest in astronomy and aircraft spotting. The all the external glass elements needed a clean and caps were missing. I noticed a small chip on of the objective elements (off axis) and was 'visible' in use. I rejected them, despite the seller trying to sell them to me for £10.00GBP as his 'best offer'. He was saying that I was "...seeing things." I replied... "But that is what binoculars are for!" and walked away.

Don't worry about it, only the central portion of the prism will be used so an edge chip will have no impact on the optical performance of the binoculars. I suspect that the glass could be reduced by about 30% and have no effect. Most of the glass will be there to fit the thing into the housing.

The chip has likely come from the prism being too tightly clamped. Do not adjust anything as lining them up again can be a problem.

It will be a case of there is damage but the damage is not in an area that actually is used.

It probably concerns you more now you have found it. If the visual aspect of the glasses has not changed and you did no come across any chips of prism glass whilst you had them apart, it has, in all probability, been there for some time. If you are still happy with them, use them and enjoy them :)

Well, either way I am finding out that the zoom bins while spot on for terrorism viewing give a bit of double vision for stargazing . It's not terrible just enough to be slightly irritating . For the most part it's rather easily ignorable but I am also going to get some fixed bins once I know which power I'm more comfortable with. I already tried one pair at one store, I will be trying out several before I make my final decision.
