4 Active Regions

Despite being into astronomy for years, I haven't done much solar observing as I am normally at work during the week and rushing around with the noise machines at the weekend.  Earlier this year, I took the plunge and made a filter from baader solar film sandwiched between two wooden discs.  As the weather is lovely, I set up 4" refractor and filter in the afternoon sun and caught 4 active regions, couple of pores and some faculae.

Fantastic, no need to worry about dark adaption or keeping warm.  The question I now ask is do I need (or want?) a hydrogen alpha telescope?

Best regards,

Mark

Oh yes. I know they are expensive but you are in for a real treat when you get one of those and witness your first eruptive prominence. Wow!

I've got a PST and really love the views. Of course I would like an LS50 or bigger but the bank account says no at the moment!

I say do it!!

So what kind of price are we talking and will it be that much better than a 35mm?

A pal of mine tells me he has a Lunt 60 on order for just over £800 which is some deal considering my Coronado 70mm cost over £2,000 12 years ago!
