Welcome to SGL, and your 7 X 50s will do a LOT for you, especially if you can get a sturdy tripod and tripod adapter (but probably you knew that already, didn't you?). Yes, hope you can get out to the countryside and away from the Beijing atmospheric and light pollution. Are English starmaps or planispheres available in Beijing? If not, send me a PM with your address and I will mail you a redundant planisphere I have for 40 N (I don't need it since I am at 34 N).

You will find that SGL has some of the most genuinely helpful (by that I mean informative and supportive) participants on the internet. A very classy site!

Binoculars are indispensible IMO. I use my 7x Nikons every day... mind you, if I could afford a pair of Canon 18x50 IS image stabilized binos, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. You're in China? They probably only cost half as much in Shanghai. Some folks have all the luck!

Welcome to the Forum

Welcome to SGL.

I would imagine that the light pollution and general air pollution around Beijing is not great for Astronomy.

Hope the skies are a little better where you now live.

Cheers
