Beer is a very strong slug/snail attractant, hence why some gardeners use beer traps. If you can get a tray a bit larger than a can and put either sand or salt in it, then sit the can in the tray, they wont cross the contents to the can.

What did the snail say to the slug?

They wont crawl over copper piping either, get a small ring of copper around your can and you should be safe, or is this an old wives tale?

They sell self adhesive copper foil tape to put around plant pots so it should work with a beer can. However placing the beer can in a shallow dish of water will also do the trick.

Cheaper version than copper, a ring of salt not only does it deter them it turns them to mush, rather messy.

Eat pistachios with your beer and put the shells round the can. Helps with my hostas, anyway.
