M13 - the start of the slippery slope I think

I finally figured out how to attach the 300D to my SW150P so I thought I'd have a first crack at taking a picture of a DSO. I thought I'd start with an easy one.

ISO800; 14 x 30 sec lights, 3 x 30 sec darks, no flats or bias. Stacked in DSS then a very quick tweak in PS Elements 7.

I will definitely try this again.

There is indeed a lot of colour hiding in the stars which shows to advantage if you reduce the magenta using the hue/saturation tool in photoshop. You can further enhance specific areas using the saturation brush............ course if you don't like dark backgrounds then this method may not appeal.:)

Anyhow, this is the kind of result you should get............ Nice capture by the way.

Cloudwatcher

How did you get the inner stars to look yellow. I have never seen them in anything other than glob regulation reds and blues?

Dalglish

With great difficulty!

No not really. Very quick and easy........... Use the sliders in Hue/Saturation tool in PS to reduce magenta and increase yellow.

See quick sample below which includes relevant history on the right in blue.

Hope that helps.

Great start, quite amazing.

Not sure about glob regulation red and blue stars though. I think the stars in M13 are blue with a smaller number of highly contrasting reds... The trick is, though, to avoid magenta, which they're not, and to get the distinction. Resolution is the key there and, in CCD, not binning the colour.
