NickH
I hear it is component costs, which is sad, as they do generally get it bang on. This one though , as with the initial Titan marketing (which was laughable in its comparison with DSLR's) is wide....9 positions or not, it's £100 more than the ASCOM compliant SX one, ASCOM meaning easily scriptable from Nebulosity, and also £50 + more than the orion model even, which is also buss powered. This additional 12V requirement means that you have to buy a psu on top..all adds up
fatwoul
Uh, dammit. I've just found this thread after noticing that the 383 has been listed as "contact us for price and availability" on FLO. I was all set to order one tomorrow! Now what do I do? What's a comparable camera?

riklaunim
If you want a tank-sized camera with this CCD look at this:Alternativen zur Atik 383L+ .. Für Ungeduldige - Astronomie.de
NickH
As I said...at this price, not much...That "tank" would come in a lot more
fatwoul
This is devastating. My plan was to get my new CCD now, and then spend the dark winter really getting on with things. Now I'm kinda...I dunno...lost. :-(
FLO
I'll request an update from Atik today, it is a bit of a long shot but they might have some good news. Steve
NickH
If Atik are still out on a limb, then the QHY is the only one similar at that price, though the Orion Parsec also uses an 8300, but it's about £600 more.. as does the SBIG, which was listed at around £1500 I seem to remember in the UK.SBIG - SBIG ST-8300M w/KAF-8300 CCD Camera (Monochrome)

FLO
The new component has proved successful so the Atik 383L will become available again sometime in December We'll update this thread as soon as we know more.
FLO
The Atik 383L camera is shipping again They will initially be in short supply so Atik are giving priority to dealers with firm orders, rather than those wanting to keep them on their shelves. A number of you have asked to be notified when the camera becomes available. I shall be emailing/phoning tomorrow but if you see this and are still interested please contact us asap. fatwoul
Are the 383s becoming more readily available again? I might be in a position to get mine in a couple of months.
FLO
Yes, kinda... We recieved a small quantity of Atik 383L this month but only enougth to cover backorders. Atik freely admit they underestimated the popularity of this model, they even asked dealers a while back to not accept new orders for 383 cameras as the backorder situation was getting out of hand. However, we have been promised at least two Atik 383L over the next 2-4 weeks. If you would like us to reserve one please contact us. Atik are confident they will be able to ramp up production in time for the next season so the situation will improve. HTH, Steve
dmahon
What's the situation this month? I'm wondering what CCD to buy (Atik, Starlight Xpress and SBIG are the current favourites, with QSI a rank outsider [on price] and QHY crossed off my list [on support]), and availablity might swing the decision. Deneb
Well Well, After our conversation Steve, do you envisage another supply of those arriving Mid April??, with 2" filters the 383L+ is a worthy replacement for a DSLR ! It be a nice comparison next to a QHY9 on an MN190 Nadeem
dmahon
I thought 36mm filters would do?
Coco
I thought 36mm filters would do?If you want an 8300 chip on 1.25 fiters you might want to consider a camera with built in filter wheel..
dmahon
36mm is 1.42" (as supported by wheels from Atik, SX and SBIG).
FLO
We have two Atik 383L cameras arriving in about 12-15 days. Both are now sold. Next delivery is due somewhere in the first half of April. FLO
I thought 36mm filters would do?Yes, 36mm are a good choice. The 1.25" filters would almost certainly cause vignetting. Baader 36mm LRGB and narrowband filters are incoming
