The Worlds Dumbest Telescope Thief

Whilst helping with an IYA astronomy taster day at a local college in Abergele, my TAL 100 on its EQ5 mount was stolen by a local scumbag (by the name of Biff!) who strolled into the Foyer, enquired as to who owned the telescope, stated his intention tio steal it, and good as his word walked off with it (fully assembled). Since everybody at the college knew who he was, where he lived etc, it was recovered in double quick time by the police who were outstanding. It appears the gentleman then sang like a Canary and dibbed a few other local villains in as well! Needless to say, any telescopes being sold in N Wales by a gentleman with tatoos on his forehead by the name of Biff, probably will not have a warranty with them.

Astronomy is full of surprises!

What an absolute clown. Glad you got your gear back mate. Hope he didn't do any damage. Why didn't anyone stop him? You are right. There are some class A scumbags around though. At least yours had a happy ending.

You'd be amazed at the chutzpah of some of our thieving community.

Nothing to do with astronomy, but I recall, years ago in my student days, a couple of guys wearing overalls drew up in a white van outside the Student Union building, asked the security man where the TV lounge was, and explained that they'd come to collect a TV 'for repair' (TVs cost a lot more in real terms then, than they do now). Rumour had it that the security guy even held the door open for them.

Needless to say neither men, van nor TV were ever heard of again. :)

Glad you got it back, amazing how many total idiots are out there.

There was a case in Glasgow, unemployed person went into his job centre where he signs on, steals a computer and takes away the security CCTV camera, given a good closeup of his face, believing the images were held inside the camera.

Needless to say he was recognised and he was collared by the police shortly after.
