Imahumanbeing
I took this a while ago and found it while sorting my pictures out. It was stacked in DSS, probably around 20/30 lights and tried to get rid of the LP in GIMP. Taken with the Canon 1000D on a tripod. jgs001
Very nice Jamie. Cassie and Perseus definitly. The double cluster is clear as is the Mirfac Association. There's a lot of stars there. Do you have the image without the pull down of the LP ... I'm wondering if you may have lost some detail in trying to process it out.
Imahumanbeing
Your probably right John, and I tried to be gentle! I really like this picture because of the amount of stars. I slightly cropped it because you can see where it has stacked and the sky has moved. Want to have a crack?IMG_casdone0001.jpg
jgs001
To be honest, I probably wouldn't do anything further with it. Except maybe run GradX on it. Need to sort mine out actually and get a new serial for my mac. I've given it a tweak with curves in GIMP. Might have gone a little too far though. barkis
Lovely, a real astro image. just to see the number of stars in this picture is astonishing. Ron.
Cloudwatcher
I can only echo Ron's comments. I've had a quick bash with Photoshop at reducing the 'glow' but the resultant lack of colour in the image does,I feel, detract somewhat from the overall visual effect........... perhaps the addition of some colour filters might help...... will have a go when I have more time. Psychobilly
Ran it through GradientExterminator - rotated and cropepd the image slightly to get rid of the hard black edge thats resulted from the stacking as I have found these really confuse GradientExterminator.. Would have been better workign from the Tiff straight out of DSS...Billy...
Imahumanbeing
Thanks a lot everyone for the comments and for having a go at making my picture look better. John, Psychobilly(looking good!), please can you tell me what this Gradient Exterminator is and is it free? I've got another one. Here is my attempt, I will have another try at it.IMG_1230001.jpgAnd uncropped with LP.cassi0001.tifJamiecassi0001.tif
Psychobilly
GradientExterminator is a plugin for Adobe PS/CS software - unfortunately its not free...
jgs001
That's another good one Jamie. I've had a bash using Noels Tools (I've not yet bought my migrate to mac code for GradX). You got M31 lower left, I can't work out much else...
Imahumanbeing
Thanks Billy, cheers John. I haven't got PS so I couldn't get thet Gradient Exterminator if I could afford it! You have really brought the stars out John. Double cluster at the top middle and the main cassiopeia stars in the middle of the picture. That is probably the most starry picture I've done. I do love my Canon 1000D!Cheers
jgs001
You gotta love those milky way shots for the sheer quantity of stars in them.
Imahumanbeing
I can't wait to get a proper shot at the main cloudy chunk of the Milky Way. I'm going to have to try and have another go at my last picture on here after seeing how many more stars you have got out of it!

Imahumanbeing
Thanks Ant! I totally agree, I was gobsmacked when I first saw the double cluster and can't wait to get a decent picture of it once I get my scope sorted.Cheers
Tim
Hey those are nice pics!Love the amount of stars there. My tip would be, download Pixinsight LE, which is free, and read the tutorial on dynamic background extraction. It will immediately resolve those gradients for you in a way no other app can.Pixinsight takes gradient exterminator, ties it to a fence, and then spanks it with cleverness.CheersTJ
Imahumanbeing
Ha ha! Thanks a lot TJ, I will get Pixinsight LE and post my new processed picture if its any good!CheersJamie
Imahumanbeing
Thanks for the advice TJ. I downloaded Pixinsight, which looked quite daunting at first!, and had a go at my picture. Its my first try and without any processing apart from a bit of a crop but it is better than my other attempts where I have clearly lost many stars with my processing. I've got something else to work on now!CheersJamieIMG_pix0001.jpg

jgs001
Well done Jamie, that's certainly worked well, and it looks to me like you got a galaxy (M31) in there too, lower left corner.
Hamal67
This was the first area I pointed my scope at last summer (first timer) and it certainly had me "wowing" for a while.
Imahumanbeing
Thanks a lot everyone. Cassiopeia is a fantastic constellation and M31 is a beast! Can't wait to see that in the 80ED John!
