72ED for spotting.

It's been snowing and its cloudy, but using my new 72ED just for noseying down the lane through the double glazing passes the time while I cook a chicken. Actually the scope is a really cute spotter, which for some who are inclined towards such a pursuit, may be a cheaper option than buying a dedicated ED spotting scope. The snow scenes below were taken through the 72ED, with a 35mm Celestron Ultima, and Tak prism diagonal using a Nokia cell phone.

I’m enjoying the views with a 66mm and 80ED for spotting. You get wider views and higher mags than spotters…. Astro eyepieces are better and Zooms are a compromise. The downside is that one thinks twice before lugging the extra weight.

My ZS61 saw far more action as a spotting scope  than it did pointing at the skies on a recent trip to the Isle of Skye. Small scopes are great for to use as spotting scopes indoors or in the garden, but I wouldn't want to use one as a regular spotting scope. The latter are a lot more rugged and generally have some level of water protection - plus they don't have sharp, knobbly bits that dig into you back when you are walking around!
