New Obsy build

I have been imaging for around ten years, and I already have a solid steel astroengineering pier on a concrete base with a 10 foot by 7 foot deck all around...

I am not in the process of sorting out an shed build around that with either a roll off, or an open up in two halves roof...not sure which yet, the shed I am using is a 20mm T&G solid wood log cabin style, which was on offer at B&Q for just £300 as they are discontinuing them...it has a really solid well built door too with good lock, and 16mm T&G roof.

It is only a 6’ square shed as it’s just to house the mount, no warm room as it’s not needed...my conservatory is only 6 feet away and I have desk in there with full PC set up.

More to come when it arrives and I start the build....

Well made some good progress today, shed up and my outside sockets re positioned on the side as they would have been stuck behind...went up really well...👍🏼

The roof has to be made now, in two halves, and then two full length 4” x 2” batons down each side to support the fire door hinges which run on bearings, have to be fitted, then the EDPM roof fitted to each half...so some work to do yet....

Door fitted and the 2 opening roof panels made up today, the other side of the panels is smooth, ready for the EDPM rubber roof membrane. Also today coated the whole shed with two coats of an oil based preservative, which soaked into the wood really well, and was able to use a sprayer so made light work of it... but my back gave up so had to pack up early....☹️

Pretty much got it finished now, roof panels rubbered up, and apex made up and fitted to the west facing roof panel, the barge boards are fixed to the shed rather than the roof panels, but the roof still overhangs by 3’ all round and has drip rails on the undersides, the hinges are superb and really heavy duty stainless steel 4” fire door hinges

So the apex of the roof is a shaped overlap?

Do you have a slight upstand on the lower leaf to reduce the likelihood of water creeping between the lips?

yes it’s an apex I made as shown in one of the pictures, to the exact shape..

There is not at the moment, but it’s rare for the rain to move up hill over 5”...unless the wind was super strong, but we rarely get wind from that direction, and that side of the roof will be clamped down with clamps inside, so the two panels will be tight together with rubber against rubber....so I’m hoping all will be good....but I have an idea if there is an issue....👍🏼👍🏼

So why are you confused by my answer....?. Can I explain better maybe...?

Looks very solid and the roof looks nicely weatherproof to me 👍 How heavy are the roof sections? Looking forward to the next stage.

Thanks much appreciated...👍🏼

Yes the roof panels really a tad heavier than I thought, Approx 15kg each...but not as bad as if I had used felt...I can lift them from the front edge and man handle them quite easily all the way over...but I am 6’2” and 95kg....but I was limited with space, so a frame to hold a roll off roof was not really an option...

Looks fabulous Stuart, how have you sealed the walls to the decking?

An excellent way of keeping out of the wind with clear skies above, quality job, well done.

Hello, and thanks much appreciated....

Sealed with a bead of silicon clear sealent, under the walls,  but also the bottom of the walls were well treated before the build too, and I will have a separate 2” x 2” framed floor inside eventually, with 9mm ply and a membrane and rubber interlocking tiles on top...but that’s for another day...👍🏼

I'm not confused- I only made the one post with a two part question- one about the shaped apex and the second about an upstand.

I asked because the resolution on the computer I am currently using is not brilliant so I wasn't sure how you topped out the roof/ apex and I asked about the upstand as I am aware that water can creep 'uphill' between two closely fitting srfaces.

Just curious is all.

Regards

Matt

You posted the confused emoji, hence why I asked...?

Well finally got around to starting the last couple of jobs, the interior floor and the hinged gallows brackets for the side to support the roof when open

The floor consists of a waterproof / breathable membrane with 600mm square rubber interlocking tiles on the top.

The brackets are made up and are 775mm x 825mm out of 4” x 3” tanalised timber and a piece left over from the shed used for the angled central pieces, and will be hinged to the sides of the shed with 3” fire door hinges, so they will fold away when not in use. Pictures to follow in a day or so, of them fitted
