I've ordered Redshift 4 to start me off because of good reviews it recieved, is there any other software you would recommend?

I found Stellarium to be excellent also Cartes Du Ciel,even though i can't use it, and both are free :hello1:

Andy why can't you use Cartes du ceil?

Best software if you ask me.

carted du ceil is very good. Its what i use

though if i had the cash it would be SB's The Sky v6 Professional

I think you want to d/l Complete Package 2.76. You can download extra catalogues separately but you probably won't need to do that for a while as you'll have lots to play with

I have used the following software:

Stellarium - Very good, Free & does not contain any Bloat ware.

Redshift 6 Premium - £30, feels a bit more classroomy, less bloatware.

StarryNight 6 Pro Plus - I have liked this was one the least - It takes up 11GB of hard drive space for a full installation plus an installation of quicktime & Java is needed. compared with The Sky6 Pro which takes 2GB Full Installation with all Catalogues inc. a moon map & telescope control.

TheSky 6 Pro - Absolutly wonderful, easy to use, written very good, only takes up 2GB of space - full install with all maps & telescope control.

TheSky6 and Voyager 4.5 look good but it would be nice if they had some observation session planning features.

I use SkyMap Pro 11. It does everything I need it to and in a simple way.

Another vote for SkyMap - accurate, plenty of catalogues, has a decent logging function, you can easily find out which objects you've seen before, relatively simple to use, with good download function for comets, asteroids etc. I'm on version 10, used it for years.

.....and it also has full telescope control capability if that's what you need.
