Which is better? differences & Why? 80ED Refractors

Recommended Posts

Good evening guy's

A short follow up question from yesterdays post regarding our new setup which we are going to purchase soon. We've been looking at this scope as mentioned in previous post.

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/pro-series/skywatcher-evostar-80ed-ds-pro-outfit.html

But we've now been looking at this scope?

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/esprit-professional-refractors/skywatcher-esprit-ed-80-pro-triplet.html

We would really appreciate some feedback on these 2 scopes and the pro's and con's for both, and which in your opinions would be the better option?

Many Thanks

Andy & Sarah

I believe the esprit is a triplet and would have better colour correction for long exposure astrophotophy.

The ED version although still used by many for AP would not be so well corrected.

Hope this helps,

If its for visual use I'd choose the 80ED DS Pro. It is an excellent 80mm refractor and comes with diagonal and finder scope. The 28mm eyepiece that comes with it though is only fit for a paperweight IMO.

Although the Esprit is an excellent scope, you could buy a 100ED DS Pro for that price, and that would significantly out gun the 80 Esprit as a visual scope.

I think Mike the OP is looking at using it for AP, from a previous post earlier in the week.

You can’t go wrong with either, but the esprit will be the rolls Royce version.

Hi mike

This scope will be mainly for imaging/astrophotography

Thanks

If money is no barrier, then the esprit. Cry once buy once!

The reviews of the scope are plentiful and the vast majority applaud its Astro photography capabilities.

If you buy new, buy from FLO the sponsor of this site and make sure you get it ‘checked and tuned’ and you can’t go wrong.

Hope this helps,

The main differences are the larger flat area for AP, the better correction because the Esprit is a triplet and the  much faster f ratio, being the most important factor.
The Esprit is f5, while the ED is f7,5, that means that the Eprit's light gathering capacity  is 2,25 x faster then the ED. So in 2 minutes the Esprit gathers as much photons as the ED in 4,5 minutes...  hence better and faster results.
For imaging the Esprit is the better scope by far, which is reflected in the price...

Yes, but in AP the mount is the weakest link in the chain, so if you can affort a better mount, go for it.

What would be your recommendation regarding mount Waldemar?
