Powrie Park, Abernethy

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks, Astronomy Scotland Facebook group have decided to have a mini-meetup. 1st September in Abernethy. We are doing it to help the local Brownies who are struggling for funds.  We will have a small £1 charge for entry and £1 for a bowl of chilli. (All proceeds to the Abernethy Brownies.)

We have access to the Pavilion for toilets and shelter should it be poor weather. And just this minute had it confirmed that the council are switching off the lights surrounding the park. Thanks P&K council.

Bill Hadley has very generously donated a Skywatcher  Mak 90 and mount, to raffle on the night, tickets will be £2. Piccy attached. Thanks Bill !

All welcome

Clear Skies

Perth & Kinross Council, and Branstons have agreed to switch of street lighting and factory floodlights - result !

Below is a before and after picture of the floodlight that caused problems last time. Branstons did a trial run switching the lights off.

  • 2 weeks later...

Looking forward to next weekend in Abernethy. Will bring my Skywatcher Skymax 127 Mak AZ Goto and Orion Optics OD250L Dobsonian. The planets are low for the Skymax right now but it provides a good crisp view of open clusters, etc with a Baader Hyperion eyepiece. Looking forward to pointing the Dob at M13 from a slightly darker site than home.

Will box the Skymax90 for easy carrying whomever wins the raffle. It's a great grab n go scope.

Well, I think we may have a record for this mini event. We have a couple on their honeymoon coming from America.  we are so thrilled to welcome Jordan Lee Miller and his new wife along. Congratulations you 2 we hope the Abernethy skies do you proud. If not the Scottish hospitality (and whisky) will make you so welcome.  And we will welcome you to our homes.

Clear Skies to all for the coming season

Many thanks to all who turned out tonight. We had Milky Way, Mars, Double Cluster, Andromeda, and the comet above Capella which was really hard to find and faint. A huge thank you to Bill who kindly donated the telescope. Jordan Lee Miller and his  new wife and friend enjoyed the hospitality and saw a few targets through telescopes, they saw the Milky Way for the first time also. They camped in the park after the busy itinery.
Around 20 folk travelled from far and wide and were rewarded with clear skies. Then clouds, then clear skies etc etc. Overall, a successful evening and Stuart Duff won the raffle prize.

Due to the generosity of folks, we raised £100 for the Brownies, not a fortune, but it will certainly help them.

Calum Mochrie, a newcomer had amazing single shot results after some help and advice from the lads.  Well done young Calum, 1st astro shots, I'd be well pleased with those. I love the M45 with clouds, really ads something
