Royal Observatory

I was in London today as my eldest daughter was taking part in a Young Voices concert at the O2 arena. There were rehearsals all afternoon which left me time to visit the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. The observatory is essentially a museum now. I think the current Royal Observatory is in Sussex somewhere. The great equatorial telescope is still used and they have open nights where the public can come and have a look through it. 

One other highlight was the remaining section of William Herschel’s telescope. It’s nice to think of all the objects first seen through this scope that we all now enjoy seeing.

It was an enjoyable afternoon topped off with a good talk on the winter skies in the planetarium. There are also some nice views of the financial district and O2 arena to be had.

You can also stand astride of the prime Meridian. One foot in the East of the world and the other in the West  

Good way to pass some time in Greenwich!

I have been there many times its a very interesting area of London. The observatory up on the hill really is the "icing on the cake", was the astrophotography exhibition still on?

Im up norh now a days. Saw it once, was great.  Would love to have a view through something like that.

Been there a couple of times years ago and yes, very interesting   Both telescopes and clocks, another of my interests

Yes! Some really fantastic images in that too. The pictures in the young persons sections were particularly impressive!
