Just wondering if anyone here has tried one of these hats that I saw on ebay?

It's basically just a baseball cap with a red light in it, but it's cheaper than a red LED head torch...

Same here. During daytime, I wear a hat. This is ideal for solar astronomy, but during the night any broad-rimmed hat or peaked cap is a liability.

I purchased one of these Observing Hoods. Does a double job of keeping me warm on winter observing nights and blocking extraneous light. Admittedly it doesn't adresss the torch issue, but I use one of the Celestron ones shown below the hood link. It can be used at varying brightness levels... 

The hoods come from Russia. But arrive quickly and Roman speaks / writes very well in English. Mine arrived in about a week. An excellent help to seeing those faint fuzzies you wrote about in your M31 thread...

Me too. I find even my red head torch gets in the way sometimes.

I need to get myself a new red light head torch. My current one has a red light and bright white light in the same unit. To get the red light on you move the switch to the left, move the switch to the right and a blinding white light comes on. You can guess which way I mostly move the switch 😂
