New Source of Light Pollution

Despite the recent petition success, I was looking at the Avex light pollution map and noticed a new source of light pollution!

I many once near-pristine dark sky areas serious local sources of light pollution have appeared, including Mid-Wales and Dartmoor.

It appears that some of the letters naming various counties have started to glow, ruining the view for astronomers who have travelled to these out of the way and once superb viewing sites.

Surely there needs to be an urgent campaign to shorten the length of the names of counties like 'Carmarthenshire' to minimise the impact of the problem?

Look at poor Devon, it gets a double dose of this new scourge!

Some local authorities are so inconsiderate!

Are these glowing letters ground based or perhaps large airborne inflatables?

Doesn't bode well, really. Buckfastleigh bottom right only has one street lamp. There'll be no end to it.

At five letters though, Devon is a third of Carmarthenshire, so it still has a third less light pollution. I feel sorry for that place in Anglessey....Llanfairpppppp etc etc etc... Its like full moon every night there!

It'll be even worse if they swap them for broadband led letters.

What's odd is not every letter is lit up. Something is a bit odd with the way they do the calcs.
