Intervalometer cable

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. I have a 350 d canon camera and cannot at the moment afford to upgrade. I run windows 7 64bit. Canon has abandoned users and do not have a driver for this, and the software i.e. BYE and others are not an option. I want to sit in my shed whilst imaging and I have my set up all extended cable wise to do this . the only problem is controlling my DSLR camera. My webcams are fine, just got usb extension leads. My question is this, if I have an intervalometer can I extend the cable to about 8 or 10 feet. And if so would I have to make it myself or can I purchase one somewhere. Hope this makes sense....Regards Geoff

I'd say don't worry about BYE and look up "Astrophotography Tool". does what BYE does and more, much more... on the web site it says it's tested with the Canon 350D, only needs RS232 (serial) cable or DSUSB controler to control Bulb expousures. I personally use APT my 40D and I think its awesome.

A DSUSB controller shouldn't be too expensive either.

APT - 12.70EUR

DSUSB - $75USD

I think its very cheap for a great setup like it seems what you're looking for.

Your cheapest option is one of these timer remotes.. the 350D uses the stereo jack plug type connection...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=c350d+timer&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xcanon+350d+timer.TRS0&_nkw=canon+350d+timer&_sacat=0

If you handy with a soldering iron you can build a cheap Serial shutter release cable.  This  will work with DSLR Shutter....

http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/CanonRelease.html  I have always used the opto isolated version and used the "Dead-bug" build... If your computer doesn't have a serial port you will need a usb to serial adaptor

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2057872.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.Xusb+serial.TRS0&_nkw=usb+serial&_sacat=0  check that the one you go for will work with the OS your using some of the cheaper ones might have "issues"

This setup  will work with DSLR Shutter....

Thanks Peter, can you tell me if I can just plug a usb cable from my 350d to my computer to use DSLR Shutter. I have no serial port on my laptop. I am asking before trying in case I damage something by plugging it in.

On the 350D the USB socket on the camera can only be used to download images to a PC, it does not control the shutter.

So as there is no Canon software for W7, you will have to get BYE or APT if you really want to save images directly to a PC.

You can still save to the memory card in your camera of course when using DSLR Shutter.

To control the shutter you only need to use the 2.5mm stereo jack socket adjacent to the USB socket, with a USB to Serial setup as described by Peter

And you can then take long Bulb exposure sequences using DSLR Shutter.

So USB to USB for the images

USB to Serial to 2.5mm stereo plug for shutter control

With the 350D ,  the longest exposure you can make over USB is 30 secs... anything longer needs to be made with the camera in bulb mode and the shutter controlled via the remote release socket.

I used to use the EOS Remote Utilities that came with the camera for camera control over USB.

I used that aswell Peter the eos utilities but it does not work on windows 7 64 bit. I realise you can make virtual os on other systems but I have trouble turning one on...LOL Will just have to save up and get a more supported camera. Thanks for your help.....Geoff

How about this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Stereo-Headphone-Extension-Cable-x/dp/B00UJTVXGM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1441726048&sr=8-2&keywords=2.5mm+stereo+headphone+extension+cable

Last year, I modified a Canon TC-80N3, to have a Stereo jack so that I could plug it into my 70D.  As I'd shortened the cable, bought a cheap 2.5mm extension cable, and made a nice long cable release.  It works fine.  As your shutter release is already the 2.5mm Stereo jack type, you can use any extension cable.  The above link is just an example.

Just finished reading the thread, if you want to follow what I did, I used one of these.

http://www.best-accessoriesuk.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_26&products_id=779

But they're expensive.  You should be able to get them cheaper on ebay or amazon, like this one... (not tried id, just an example)
