Numbers Check before CCD Purchase

Hi all

I'll keep it short and sweet as I've read lots of really good info on here already.

Getting ready for the move from DSLR to CCD

In my case could someone confirm my sanity (or lack of ??) with my potential purchase.

CCD - Atik 428ex mono + filter wheel + LRGB filters (1.25")

To be used with WO GT102 Refractor + 0.8 FR/FF

My calcs for choosing this camera.

Pixel size 4.54 µM

Focal Length 563mm (with reducer)

For me this comes out at 1.66 arcsec/pixel falling into the 1 - 2 range typically recommended with 1x1 binning?

I've taken into consideration the reduction of FOV for this ccd chip as the targets I hope to image will fall within this.

Hope on the right lines?

As always thanks for any pointers ?

Regards

Neil

You are, I think, on the right lines. It all makes good sense. You'll get nice resolution without chasing the impossible and as long as you know the FOV you'll get, and are happy with it, then I think the setup will do what you expect it to do.

Thanks Olly

I've done a fair bit of reading up on it and obviously it's not a cheap upgrade.

It's also quite a popular topic on here at the moment so I'll be keeping an eye on other posts as well.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks Michael

I'm going to stay in budget and not get lured away

It's not easy deciding, but I'm clear on what I want to image and how much I want to spend.

You can't blame us for trying, though!!! It's an SGL tradition, after all...

I got the 460ex (same chip as 428ex) great cam.

With the 9-Pos EFW2 you never have to open up that Filterwheel (great plus....) and can have LRGBHaOIIISII plus still some LP Filter.

you'll love the new setup.

Finally you can also make a good set of master bias & darks with defined temperature!

P.s. take into consideration the spacing! You'll probably need some kind of spacers to get it all in the correct backfocus.

The 460 has a much larger chip than the 428.

I have the 428...its a good little camera. The fan sounds like it's about to achieve orbit and the cooling can be a bit marginal (though the chip is quiet). I'm running it on an Altair 115mm triplet with .70 FR. I just wish for a bit more real estate at times and am considering a larger chip.

Even if I applied a generous WER %

I don't think I'd get away with it.

And you can all stop with little "Dark Side" chanting........

.... Bigger Chip, Bigger Chip :-)

*WER. Wife Exchange Rate

(apologies, I'm sure I stole that off someone on SGL)

Yep, that'll be the next bit of research.

Currently use my dslr with t-adapter to 0.8 FR/FF and the focuser is out at 60 mm( I assume mm, never really thought about that, just wind out to same number each session)

So I assume sensor distance on new ccd will need to match sensor distance from dslr?

By adding a filter wheel, I guess I'm moving the focuser in to compensate.

One to check I guess.

Thanks,

I appreciate that the sensor in my dslr is recessed much further back than a ccd camera.

So am I right in thinking the following?

Atik 428ex with sensor recessed 13mm and William Optics recommending 60.95mm sensor to t-adapter face, that I will need to add a spacer 47.95mm - the width of the filter wheel.

So something like a 30mm spacer?

Or do the attachments on the filter wheel absorb some of that distance?

Please tell me if I'm talking rubbish.

Neil,

Yes...the space will include the width of the FW.

Welcome to the world of spacers. If you really want a challenge, the try and squeeze an OAG in there too!

Well you're all horrible people

I bought the 460ex after all.

(you won't believe how many times I swapped between 428ex, 460ex, 428ex)

I was happy with all the research I'd done but at the final moment I went with the 460.

It's an odd feeling, more relief that I've done that as opposed to happy with a new purchase?

This CCD purchase thing AIN'T easy !

I had considered this CCD but after discussions i ended up with the 460EX.

The bigger chip was a big lure.

told you the lure of the dark side was toooooo much temptation.

sorry (no i'm not) that i started the temptation for bigger CCD fever
