Met Office satellite weather

After months of threatening the Met Office have done away with the excellent sat weather map and replaced it with something completely useless, WHY ?

yes, that's the thing.  Takes ages to load, lacks detail, is a nightmare to navigate particularly on a tablet, much detail is obscured by 'drop-up' menu, there are no towns, just inaccurately positioned names where space permits 

Once upon a time there was a clear precipitation chart, an easy-to-read cloud map in in IR and visible and a graphic weather forecast for towns.  Not any more. 

Progress, eh?  As Davey-T says: 'why'?

Think they hAve produced a bespoke astronomy weather app , scope nights or similar

I use the Met Office website for absolutely nothing. They do produce some great products but are too bent on producing products that they can sell. The rest is presented quite poorly and diluted with Climate Change propaganda.

For their rainfall radar (which I use for work) I look here: http://www.weathercast.co.uk/radar/united-kingdom.html

For IR satellite loops I look to the national weather service of a more civilised country: http://www.yr.no/satellitt/europa_animasjon.html

Well the MetOffice, and those who regurgitate their data (BBC, and all manner of other forecasters) got it entirely wrong for my location last night. I looked at the satellite images on Sat24 and thought it would be clear for most of the night for all NW England - unlike the forecasts - and that proved to be the case. So how can a simple 10sec viewing of a satellite image be more reliable than the output of a multi-million pound resource like the MetOffice?

I agree it's not as good as the old one, although I haven't used that one for quite a long time, maybe a year or more. So I've kinda got used to this one.

It is slower on occassion, which I assume is down to adverts and other unnecessary guff.

Almcl - I use it with a tablet. The drop up menu can be hidden by tapping a button at the top. By zooming in the place names and markers are more obvious. I must say I usually use it zoomed out as I like to see the animation over the last few hours so I can see if it's going to be clear and for how long.

I agree it could be better though.

PS I keep meaning to send them an email about the pros and cons of their site for astronomers. Maybe if we all did that they might do something about it. Ever the optimist, Eh?

Agreed.'new' approach is pants.  It was much easier to model/predict rain, clear skies etc. with the old pages.

I now use a range of sites to get an 'answer'.
