i would say sell all your eps, and buy a 6mm a 13mm and 21mm all ethos of course and then a 31mm t5, sorted covers the whole range and you only need a man bag to put them in  ,and if you pick the right colour bag it will suit your gloves

Or win the lottery, move into a obs built on a chilean mountain inc minimum 60" mirrors scope and away you go.

Would a 27mm Panoptic be a consideration to complement your line up of mid / high power delos?  It has 16mm eye relief if you feel that this will just about be enough, I use to find eye placement to be quite comfortable on this e.p.

eye testing this afternoon will decide what I get, having drops in my eyes to dilate them so will ask them for a measure, honestly dont want to go below a 28 as then it really makes the 22 redundant. and a 28 or 30 by 82 degrees still gives my 1.5 degree tfov where as the 22 is a shade over 1. The 42mm spotter is 2 degree but as previously mentioned, it i merely a spotting ep so i do not m,ind the oversized exit pupil.

I will advise the eyue test result and where I think it will take me.....

Steve.......I'm having similar treatment  a Week today, so hoping they can measure for me!

What do you think your measurements are before the test ? I can  measure 4.5mm-ish as a guide for my pupils, I'm assuming under chemical dilation I should be about 5.5mm?

The 35mm panoptic worked effectively when I had a 12" flextube, used at a dark location, the large exit pupil was acceptable. Very comfortable eye relief I think around 28mm, I recall that it captured the Veil and other larger objects particularly well.

Ok back from the opticians and here's what happened. They didn't actually dilate my pupils, the optician had a special infra red bit of kit ( think its called a thingummybob) usually used for measuring eye pupils for laser surgery, but he kindly did mine for me after I explained my hobby (read obsession) and they measured up to a very nice (at least) 6mm.

Now he didnt leave it long for them to dilate either, no more than a couple of minutes and the room was still well lit from his pc monitor so I reckon there is scope for a little bit more dilation in there at a good dark site.

However, I am a pragmatist here and realise that most of my viewing is done from a light polluted back garden where 6mm will be very acceptable. Also I am recieving some trial contact lens next week which were selected with both everyday and astronomy needs in mind. Lens Options abound for astigmatised people.

So I have now decided to do nothing re: new ep and wait for the trial contacts and hopefully get a good night at the eyepiece of my scope then go through the full range of eyepiece/magnifications as much as conditions will allow. But I will try to see in particular if I can get on with my Axiom 31mm when not using glasses. I can add another weight to the scopes base and this then largely take that issue out of the equation and see if my viewing experience improves. With glasses it just isnt cutting it right, without glasses maybe I can spare myself a lot of hassle. It would be fools folly to not at least give it one more go before I start spending another £200+ on a premium eyepiece when maybe the one I want is sat in my box save a little perseverance

The story continues!

  • 2 weeks later...

............They didn't measure my  pupils either?   the images were ok  and everything is looking good,  but she explained that it was close, my pupils looked small,  but on this occasion no drops required, and also advised that  their equipment cant offer a measuring facility? see your own opticians.  When I explained to own opticians to explain to them  what I was trying to achieve, I  was called back (left a message, and told  to fit a dioptre lens. WT? )  I just want my pupils measured, is that so difficult. Obviously it is! I'm somewhere between 4-7, but I want a definitive answer.  I've tried various DIY methods of measurement. Just thought having my eyes examined by a specialist would be a solution.
