I downloaded it to give it a try, but can't start it up. Reinstalled it just in case, still won't start up.

Unsure if it's a gfx hardware support issue?

If I have this right then that means you need a graphics card to run this release. That will be disappointing to many people who use stellarium who havnt got a graphics card.Does this mean all future updates will be graphics card dependent?

Today was published second technology preview release of Stellarium 0.13.0. Series 0.13 based on Qt5 technology - as example 0.13.0alpha4 based on Qt 5.2.0. For this series needed graphics card with OpenGL 2+ support.

We propose 0.13.0alpha4 only for testing and NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION. If you find bugs or regress then please tell us about it.

Changes from first alpha: 2 new plugins, bug fixing and improvements (e.g. comet tails).
