Every thread I've read says the opposite, the light coming out of the first would be muliplied by the second ie multiplied...

Remember that the powers are additional so 3x & 2x would give 5x not 6x.

Everything works better with PowerMates (and Meade TeleXtenders) ;)

stacking a 2x and 3x barlow should yield 6x, but the value can vary depending on the EP used (the exact position of the image plane in the EP varies, which means the position of focus varies, and therefore the exact magnification varies).
